Also, people who suggest  Ancelotti couldn't take us into the champions league because he needs to be at an established CL club like Milan or Chelsea are forgetting that he managed to do it with Parma courtesy of a runners up spot in Serie A.

I admit I don't have any great knowledge of Serie A, but how does that equate to doing something similar in modern the PL?  Do they have a vastly entrenched top 4 that nobody else can penetrate or are the top spots shared around more evenly?
Im not to sure but they did have Buffon, Thuram, Cannavaro, Veron, Almeyda, Sergio Concecao and Crespo to name but a few.

They also had a huge sponsorship deal with Parmalat which enabled them to spend big on players, when they went bankrupt and the money ran dry Parma declined as a force.

That's right.  Didn't they have some mega rich company bankrolling them?  Parmalite or something like that??

Glenn Hoodle and The News of the World. Cool.

hughes is not my top choice by far but i would not discredit him , he has a good record as a manager and a good reputation as a man manager and has made many good signings and had success at lesser clubs than villa- if he is chosen i will back him to succeed.

I am really interested and somewhat shocked that people will take Hughes over Ancelotti !

Now, even if the obvious seems ridiculous, I actually find the reasons given, also astounding.

So, you don't want Ancelotti - a manager considered in the three best in the world, a manager who has won Italian Leagues, Italian cups, English Leagues, English cups, Champions Leagues - and a guy who is 51 yrs old so still young.

Reason why don't want - he will see us as a stepping stone to bigger things, and could leave us in two years for something better.

And then you have Hughes, who has won.......................................er.......................................er....................................

And, in the space of around 6 yrs has managed Wales, Blackburn, Man City, Fulham and possibly Villa !

So how is that a "safe" appointment.

Fergie product ? - so you don't think he will be interested in the Man U when Fergie goes then ? - no doubt he wouldn't get it - but I bet your bottom dollar his agent will try and get him an interview - leaving us up s... creek.

MON mk 2 - both of them don't like year to year contracts for nothing you know !

Don't think it's a case of people not wanting Ancelotti - it's whether a man who walked into winning clubs in Milan and Chelsea, and won again with them, is the right man to take Villa forward. And whether Ancelotti would come to Villa, knowing that he won't be working with the finest group of footballers in the league, and won't be seeing any Champions League football anytime soon.

As I said on the other thread, Ancelotti has zero experience of rebuilding a mid sized, mid table PL side operating under financial constraints.
But isn't the crux of your argument that zero experience of doing something doesn't necessarily mean it can't be done?

No, my argument is that the criteria for the Villa now job should be about more than just who has won the most trophies. That the challenge facing whoever we get is nothing like the one at Chelsea or Milan. it's about rebuilding now and putting in place a strategy to allow us to have the best possible chance to win things in the future.

It requires long term thinking, not just a quick fix. I am not arguing for any specific candidate but rather the type of manager we should be going for and, in my opinion, Ancelotti does not fit the profile.

Ancelotti didn't get picked out of a crowd and given a silver spoon.  He got those jobs because he'd achieved his targets at previous clubs.  He's has a big reputation because he's earned it.  Moyes and Hughes don't have such a big reputation because they haven't earned it... yet.  So the crux is do we hope that a manager with a decent track record can come in and make a name for himself or do we bring in someone who's already made a name for himself.

??????????????

Name me better

English League , English Cup , Italian League , Italian Cup , 2 x Champions Leagues.

Only possible comparisons

Fergie , Guardiola , Mourinho

No others even compare with his record, not even the "so called greats" like Hiddink etc...

Jesus wept - this is the guy who 12 months ago had just won the double !!!!

My late 90's Italian history is a bit rusty but weren't Milan in a bit of a bad way when Anchelotti rocked up? After capello left in 1995 they became quite mid table and subservient to Juve and inter.

Anyway, he's worth it just to see that eyebrow freely gravitating to wherever it desires with the same fluency of a jumping trout.

We need stability, a manager who will stick with us for the long haul, develop a competitive squad and bring an authoritative persona to the job. Moyes would be the ideal candidate, IMO.

What the club doesn't need is a shiny, gold-plated cock-swinging contest. Ancelotti represents that.

Didn't he make Parma a strong force as well ? He may prefer taking a job like ours which isn't so high profiled and always under the media spotlight.
