It's a balance, you need results but if you start playing good football that will come.

Succinct. Ta

Can't believe anyone would seriously even consider Gus Poyet.  We are Aston Villa for goodness sake, who the hell is he in managerial terms?  We need an experienced top level manager such as Ancelotti or Moyes IMO, not an experiment to further the career of some ex Chelsea player.  Remember when Ince went to Blackburn after guiding MK Dons to promotion?  It was an unmitigated disaster and hiring Poyet would be too.  Gus Poyet?  Really?   ???

Who the hell was Moyes in managerial terms before he went to Everton?

I was waiting for that response.  Moyes has done well at Everton as is plainly obvious but there are also the likes of Ince who didn't do well.  Moyes was a successful gamble for Everton but are we really in a position to be taking gambles on unproven (at this level) managers?  I don't think so.

My claim to fame - I've played football for a few seconds against Roberto Martinez.

PAH! I've played against Pat Heard.

I have NEARLY played with Emlyn Hughes. (Got delayed, but did phone in. Still remember the "some joker on the phone says he's Emlyn Hughes")

But isn't any manager a gamble?

Ancelotti - has only managed clubs with huge pots of money to spend. Can he cut it with a lower budget?
Benitez - ditto.
Moyes - has he reached his limit with Everton?
Van Gaal / Van Baasten etc - never managed in England.
Alex Ferguson - could he recreate his success outside of Man U?

I see what you're saying, and to an extent agree. We should be setting our sights high. However, if we approach and get knocked back by Ancelotti or my first choice who would be Moyes, I would far rather we look to appoint a bright, young up-and-coming manager like Martinez or Poyet, than someone like Hughes or McClaren who've had top jobs and experience but are massively uninspiring.

If we're gong down the route of young, unproven at this level managers I'd go for Paul Lambert.

As it pains me to say it, Steve McClaren could end up here. He's "friends" with Lerner, and the club have the PR in place to sell it to us.

I think he is very good coach, and he's done quite well since England. He'll do ok somewhere, But seriously, what a completely embarassing wanker.

Hughton would be ok as an assistant, that's about it though.
