I don't know how much he thinks he's worth but if no-one else is prepared to pay him what he wants either, I wouldn't write off the prospect of Reo-Coker re-signing for us later this summer.

Arguably the value of something is how much it would cost to replace it. Would we prefer NRC to stay, even if only as a squad player rather than a first choice? I would. So how much would we have to pay to replace him? Okay, that's very subjective since views as to his ability vary so much, but if it's a transfer fee of £4m and £25k per week then in theory we could afford to give him a 4 year contract of £45k per week. If he's asked for a lot more, then good luck elsewhere NRC. I just hope we've let him go because we have identified an upgrade.

This was the theory when Bosmans first started. It soon became clear that if you give a player lots of money because he's on a free then a) he'll be happy to sit around doing nothing until his contract runs out and you can't get rid because nobody else will pay him that much (Hadji, Kachloul) and b) giving a massive rise to one player means everyone else wants the same (Carbone).

I thinks thats a bit of a cynical view really. Most players apart from a few complete wasters want to play as even if they're totally motivated by money they realise their next contract won't be worth much if they haven't played for 2 seasons.

NRC was basically kicked to the curb by MON early on and would have been a bit part player at the most if MON had stayed. given those circumstances and the fact he probably hasn't got particulary fond memories of his time at Villa i'm not surprised he's looking elsewhere and lets be honest he's probably been talking to other clubs since January.

None of these, except for NRC have had any first team impact last season, so there's no loss. NRC only stepped up for the last few weeks. NRC is at best an average / limited player not suited to how we intend to play. I expect Delph to step up and take his place.

We can add A Young, Warnock, Beye & Heskey (hopefully) to that list which releases some cash for young / hungry replacements. 

We need to remember that GH won't limit his search to the UK.

totally different situation i think. NRC was dumped on the scrapheap by the last boss. He's been back in favour this season but a) he has no idea if he figures in GH plans and b) whether the guy will be here in a week and he's faced with a new manager who doesn't want him.

Given the above, if a club or manager who really want him have been in contact i'm not surprised he's cut his losses.

You'll have to explain that one because it sounds as if you're sympathising with an England international who is in demand by several clubs who is refusing to commit to his present club, who have single-handedly made him one of the most sought-after PL players this summer; on the other hand it sounds like you're criticizing a player who wasn't offered a deal at a club and now has to look elsewhere with no guarantee of employment.

ATAL, it does help to be at least a little bit informed before wading in. He was out of contract because he turned down our offers no doubt aware through his agent of where he'll be playing next season. By doing it this way the money that the next club might have had to spend on a transfer fee will go in his pocket instead.

Agree. It is very strange.

For the last few weeks NRC has been going on about moves to big Italian clubs and has never seemed to make much reference to staying at Villa. He probably made his mind up ages ago in the (probably misguided) belief that he could make a move to a bigger club. He had his eye more clearly on the exit than Downing does now.

I don't believe this has anything to do with lingering resentment towards his treatment under MoN. At the end of the day he had regular first team football under the previous management. The one thing this has to do with is Nigel Reo Coker and his bank balance.

At least Downing will get a move to a bigger and better club.

That's "informed" is it? Maybe his agent should share the info with his client because as of yesterday, despite his wedding proposal acceptance, he was very sad to be leaving us. My 'guess' is he doesn't know where he'll be playing next season. Or is "informed" the fact that agents are greedy?
