With all due respect to you Villan for Life i think we are doing the opppsite to making progress and are falling behind. certainly in the one day game . Guys like Maddy and Carter are past their best and are becoming injury prone. The likes of Barker,Westwood,Clarke and Miller continue to fail. Chopra has been a big disappointment in the one day games Botha has been told he can leave and the jury is still out on the likes of Patel and Piolet. Woakes a undoubted talent in the 4 day game seems to be very hit and miss in the one day game. That leaves Porterfield, the wicket keeper whose name escapes me at the moment as the only bright spots so far this season. With Bell and Trott away with England for the forseeable future and Rankin for some reason never selected i just don't see how we are progressing, surely the fact this is only the second time we have failed to at least qualify for at least the Quarter Finals tells us we are falling behind

Surely the counter arguement is the progress in the 4 day game?

I agree with your sentiments about Barker but think that a little perspective is needed. Yes we lost to Scotland by a few runs (and Barker's last ball wide laid the foundations of our defeat), but chasing under DL is a lottery and always seems weighted in favour of the fielding side. I think that we're making progress and we've the nucleus of a competitive squad.

Cricinfo says it was a DL game but both sides had 22 overs, they got 120 and we were 4 short - very poor performance. However, doing well in the CC which is what counts the most.

Yes we are doing well in CC at the moment and i hope it continues. Will be amazed if we do any better than 3rd though,we have already been thrashed home and away by Durham and thrashed by Lancashire at home.

Third place with a game in hand is a handy place to be as we enter the final third of the season.

You have to question if Giles has the coaching balance right. Last season we were a poor championship side but a good T20/CB40 side (the T20 quarter final humiliation aside). This year we're strong in the championship but have been poor in the T20. Is there too great an emphasis on 4 day cricket at the expense of the shorter format?

We did get close in a few T20 games but could not finish sides off. We lack a killer instinct in T20 and have suffered from the lack of a top overseas T20 player.

Yeah not a bad day for the Bears, hard going but dug in and in a decent position .Porterfield and Evans did well as did Ambrose and Woakes. On the down side Westwood and Clarke failed yet again.Feel we need a few more yet as the bowling without Maddy and Rankin looks a bit light

300 + will be a good total which should give the bowlers something to think about. We'll miss Rankin though.

To give Clarke his due, he was given out to a lousy LBW decision. Typical bad luck of a batsman out of form.

407 for 8 and still going.  Barker's got his 50.  Fabulous effort from 192 for 6.

Barker and Patel still together - Barker 103 not out, Patel closing in on his 50.  They've put on 120 so far in 25 overs.  Great stuff.

521 all out.  I do love a good fight from the tail-enders.

192-6 at one stage, so 329 runs from the last 4 wickets.

If I was a Sussex fan I'd be pissed off.

Good day for the bears, still can't belive we managed 521.Either our lower order played out of their skins or their bowlers are crap. Seeing that ex bear was their best bowler probably a bit of both.

Part of the Sussex attack isn't that bad, although that fact that 118 of the 152 overs were bowled by 3 bowlers (Monty, Anyon and Naved-Ul-Hasan) suggests that other than these three they haven't got much else.

More praise for our tail-enders is what I say.
