How can you over hype a goal like that !

By replaying it ad nauseum on telly, by reproducing the entire sequence leading up to the goal in photographs on non-sports pages of newspapers and having radio phone ins to discuss whether or not it was the best goal what's ever been scored. Ever.

Yep. That's the problem. Rooney scored it once, I've had to watch it a million times because I can't get away from the repeats. The constant repetition is counterproductive though because the more I see it the more ordinary it looks. I'm reminded of Jack Dee's comments about the assassination of JFK. Shocked at first, then after the first few hundred viewings he was thinking, "hey, nice convertible"

It's too easy just to reply, "don't watch it then", or "just ignore it'. The point is if I like football then I'm drawn to the programmes. I just want the content to be more balanced.

Good goal - yes, although Sinclairs was better. Media poster pull outs meh. Used mine to light the fire.

I don't think that we are the only ones to think that the reaction to this has been over the top! LINK

I'venonly seen it once. Haven't any seen any replays and haven't read any newspapers, so I don't feel like i've had it shoved down my throat.

Ricky Villa's goal was better than Giggs!

Ricky Villa's goal was hyped up to the ceiling.  I thought Man City's first goal in the same match was better.

I've only seen a replay of the goal twice, during the game itself, whilst in the King Edward pub in Blackpool. Luckliy we had to leave before Sky showed us over and over and over again and i've not seen it since.

Only on H&V could a player score a goal that will rarely be seen executed in that manner, and be shot at. Seriously, given the tense vibe of the game, the fact United were a little on the back foot following City getting the equalizer a few minutes previously, and the fact is was a dog of a cross, all make the strike even better. I said when he scored it that it was one of the most incredible goals I had ever seen. Given all the pressure on him, and the game, it elevates in above most I have ever seen. There will always be one better, but christ on a bike, enjoy the skill. Don't care as long as it is not scored for Blues!!

I also thought the celebration was telling of how good a goal it was, and of what a relief it was to Rooney. He just stood, arms out, eyes closed, head back taking in the adulation of 70,000 people. I would imagine that life rarely gets better than that moment.

Having said all that Stan's goal against Madrid is my favourite of all time. Never had a game like that since for atmosphere, with that goal at the crescendo.

I agree with all of this.

I only saw it for the first time yesterday - after having heard so much about it, I searched online for it.

It was clearly a really excellent goal, but from the plaudits it was getting, I was expecting something like that Van Basten goal in 1988 - a truly top level goal, which I don't think it was.

Wonder strike, wonder goal. It's the kind of ending you expect to see at the end of a cheesy movie about football.

Don't think it's over hyped, it was fantastic. Maybe not as good as Sinclair's goal but it's up there. Goals like that don't come around too often. Maybe it's getting diluted down because people are scoring goals like this every game on their consoles or something?????
