Or maybe the manager was not well enough to be ready before September although I admit it's a good conspiracy theory.

My guess is that Randy wants to see some of these so called experienced players prove their worth before their value us completely written off. Indeed the same applies to a few of our youngsters.

I reckon AM will be backed in January and further in the future once he too (along with the players above) have proven he is able. Admittedly his hands are tied right now but when one or two of the "IFs" materialise then we can spend better, in a more focused manner in the future.

One department where we do not have either a promising youngster or a senior player with a point to prove is a DM. I still hope we intend to improve there.

James Nursey's article was interesting earlier, and although a part of me was not surprised that he's had a little dig at us already, i did agree with most of what he said. We do need new blood, but we can all see that.

I think he's wrong about Makoun and Bannan though, those two have have got something to offer.

I really like Makoun and think he'll have a fine season.

At this moment in time, i see it as the following,

Players we can rely on;
Given,
Young,
Clark,
Makoun,
N'Zogbia,
Bent,
Agbonlahor.

Jury's out;
Cuellar,
Guzan,
Delph,
Bannan,
Delfouneso,
Albrighton

Players we can't,

Beye,
Lichaj,
Warnock,
Dunne,
Collins,
Ireland,
Petrov,
Hogg,
Heskey.

I base that on the overall 'big picture' last season, not just a run of games here and there and what i've seen / heard so far pre season. I put Cuellar in the jurys out due to the uncertainty over his future and 1 year left on contract, not on ability.

You could argue for N'Zogbia being 'jury's out' as he hasn't played for us yet but i've seen enough last season to feel confident he will do well. He appeared to want the move as well.

Interesting way of looking at things Charles and I think most of us would agree with your classification.
That "can't" list is way too big!

I have faith that N'Zogbia will be good for us next season, and probably the one after that, but you can bet your bottom dollar, that come 2 summers time he will be off to one of the richer clubs as a consequence. Need to enjoy him while we have him.

All depends on what you mean by "rely on".
Lichaj, Petrov, Hogg, Heskey can all be relied upon to give of their best for every minute they're required to. They may not be good enough to sustain our P'ship status, but I don't doubt their reliability.
Conversely, I wouldn't rely on Delfouneso at all; I don't think he quite has it for the P'ship.
Makoun is definitely in the "jury's out" category since he has not yet proved he has P'ship quality.
Where do GG, Baker, Herd, Lowry and Johnson fit on your list?! - I guess that they're all in the "Jury's Out" list?

However you cut the list above, the key issue is: the squad ain't got the depth to sustain a full league / cups programme given that we are bound to get our quota of injuries.

We could all make those type of lists and most of them would probably be different. It makes interesting reading though.
