Sure Downing doesn't have the pace of Gabby or Young, but he's no slouch either. Our game over a number of years was based on pace and having good wide players. I think it will be important to bring in players with pace because it is such a dangerous attribute. What was it Alan Hansen used to say, there's nothing defenders hate more than wingers/strikers with pace?

I thought it was  "it's a braw, bricht, moonlicht nicht the nicht"  :P

Agree in many ways Irish, it's just that we have all seen our attacking prowess become a bit stilted over the last season or two...teams know how we are going to attack them...through Ash/Downing and can prepare for that. Walker's pace from full back was brilliant at times for instance... two full time wingers a bit of a luxury?...switching play and having options to catch the opposition out is a better tactic than out and out pace...unless you're Usain Bolt or doing a runner from a curry house!

With Young going and Downing looking likely we will forced to play a different game anyway....as we will be doing under AM, anyway....so, with Albrighton we have pace, an out and out winger, but the option to create more through the middle with someone like Parker (and maybe Ireland? Delph? Makoun?). The loss of our two "wingers" should/could make us a better footballing side!!??  (kneels down and prays!)

Should we sign N'Zogbia it's noticable that he's much moe direct than our present wingers and likes to drive infield and get into the box as opposed to going on the outisde and getting a cross in, which is how Albrighton likes to play.  So by having those two either side we immediately have a variance in how we play.  We've already got a top class striker who can take advantage of either avenue, so were we to get a good attacking midfielder, and we may already have him in Delph or Ireland, then they can link with N'Zogbia/get the ball out to Marc and suddenly we'll have some very good attacking options.

I think I thought that's what I was thinking, pretty much...I'm just shit with the words!
Thank you for clarifying things for me John! Wonderfully reassuring to think that two Villa fans have the same sort of ideas!

Not sure west ham would take £7m- they accepted a Turkish bid of £10m from fenerbache last week but Parker wasn't interested as he has a young family and doesn't want to go abroad.

My worry would be that Harry is sniffing around and Parker would probably prefer spurs.

As a London boy he will be tempted to stay there and Harry, the Cockney spiv, will have a bit of clout with him. Spurs would be a better option on paper but can't quite see how he'd fit into the Spurs midfield....unless Modric went and they reshuffled...which Levy says there's no chance of...
We can live in hope eastie!

Agree mossy, I think a bid of £8m would maybe tempt them, would be nice if we could throw in beye or heskey as part of it.
Was it big Sam who took beye to newcastle?

I should think it's more likely that 'Arry is desperate to sign him but levy his holding him back saying no, you don't need him unless you're going to get rid of CM's

Of all the links so far

Hutton, N'Zogbia, Parker - Good.

Given - Not so good.

Were it me I'd prefer Foster over Given.

I don't think it's a money issue though, my guess is that relations are quite strained between the clubs and we're reluctant to do business with them.

Foster.

Having said that, i'd prefer Given to Flappy McFlap Flap Robert Green.

I reckon that maybe Foster's wages would be less than Given's
We're supposed to be paying old Shay £60k pw, down from his £80k salary (according to The Times).

Agreed John. Foster for me every time...but they'd want a lot for him, and as you say..."strained" is being diplomatic!
