Samaras couldn't score in a brothel ffs 3 Goals for a number 9 in one of the big Two in Scotland is no record to be proud of.
My point was that he scored 28 goals in 85 appearances  in that tinpot League, but he's utterly shit and wouldn't score anything like that down here.
He scored 8 in 55 for Man City.

brought a Poor Birmingham team back up won a trophy with them,

Then took them straight back down again.

Qualified through the group stages and reached the knockout stages- for a club in such an inferior league he must have some motivational powers.

Alex is our manager now and it saddens me that some seem to be almost wishing him to fail just to prove a point - he deserves a chance before people get on his back, and if he fails then by all means have a go but this apathy towards him is very disappointing.

I'm well aware that he's our Manager and I want him to succeed, but the fact remains that his record is pretty sub-standard and the original point was that Scottish football is of a shit standard.

Got through the group stage in a group with Porto (who finished bottom) and Artmedia, and got knocked out in the first knock out match.

I'll give him a go - we have no choice - but I'm amazed you're surprised at apathy. What on earth do you expect with his recent record?

It's absolutely nothing to do with wanting him to fail. I want him to be a gigantic success. I'm just not going to pretend he has a record which suggests he deserves to be in the job, because he doesn't

Case in point Kris Boyd

Exactly.
There are a few that spring to mind.

Marco Negri (you might well say who the fuck is that) scored 23 goals in his first 10 games for Rangers.

No fletch - your opinion is his record is substandard- far from a fact when considering his overall record as a manager and the silverware he has won.

If mcleish is substandard god knows what mon must be having spend around £130m at villa and won what?

There is very little to compare between them trophy wise apart from the fact o neill spent far far more in the process.

Give Alex reasonable backing and he will do a good job here for us.

How far in Europe?
[/quote]

Knockout stages of  Champions League might not be much in comparison to some but for a guy who's only real big outlay on Transfers was Mikel Arteta (even that deal was initialised by Advocaat) in his whole time at Ibrox it was a good achievement.

As poor as SPL is and it is dire believe me the EPL aint much better only 4 teams have won title and in all honesty we could all probably name top 4 just now for next season.

Silverware - League cup, i'll give you that, although it was at a cost of their Premiership place. The Scottish tat he won can't be counted. Big deal, he won some of the 2 horse races up there (unless you count the time he came third!)

Two relegations is what I would class as pretty sub-standard.
As far as a club like Villa go, he certainly is sub-standard.

I just hope to God he goes against type and is a success for us.

Finished 2nd and 3rd with Motherwell in SCottish Premier that is not a bad feat by anyone standards

That along with getting the Rags to 9th and winning a cup suggests that he does have something about him and that Greg is either ill informed (again) or on a wind up (again) or both (again).

Whether that something is enough to revitalise us is another thing altogether but we're clearly not talking about a complete duffer as some people pretend.

As much as I hate the hype surrounding the EPL, it's streets ahead of the SPL.
Most, if not all, teams outside the top 4 are better than Rangers or Celtic.

No he's not a 'complete duffer' he's simply not good enough.
Winning a cup is not much good if you're going to relegate your team at the end of the same season.

All of the fans I have spoken to since he took over want him to do well, but there is a definite lack of enthusiasm and anticipation for the coming season.  I have not even looked at the fixtures beyond the opening match which is a first for me, and I started going in 1966.

Winning a cup is not much good if you're going to relegate your team at the end of the same season.

It is if you're the Blues. They clearly didn't have the squad for runs in both cups and the league but they're used to being relegated every few years, winning a cup is once in a lifetme.
