Etherington isnt a bad player but hardly inspiring either. And that's what we need right now.
I'd much rather take a punt on a young player like Chamberlain.
Still got a feeling that we're going to morph into The Dog Shit mk2, I think we'll be signing the sort of crud he signed for them.

yep. wait and see who he brings in but its not looking promising

In fairness how do we know how promising it looks? We hear so much shit about who we're looking at and who we're not.

yep its all rumour as you say. I just think a 30 year old winger from the prem's anti-football team isn't much to write home about. More importantly its not going to persuade the likes of Bent that we have any ambition after flogging Young and probably Downing.

Fletch, did he sign Johnson, Dann,Foster, Hleb, Gardner & Larsson or did Fist-face bring any of those in? Reason I'm asking is because all of those would improve our squad
Yes, but he also signed Murphy, Zigic, Carr, Jerome, Fahey, Beausejour, Davies and Marlon 'Did that woman spill my pint?' King.

In his favour, he took a punt on two Championship centre halves in Johnson and Dann, not many Premiership Managers have got the bottle to sign Championship players with potential.

As a side note, how good would Dann and Johnson have been if the Dog Shit DIDN'T play a defensive game?

I'm not totally convinced some of these younger 'superstars' from the lower leagues are better than what we've got.

Victor Moses was hyped up & he's hardly played for Wigan.

He's only 20 years old. I wouldn't right him off just now.

Agree with cb about Etherington and Given. There's a big world out there, we need to look a little bit further than journeymen reaching the end of their careers.

Always rated Moses, I still think he'll come good.
If Wigan are not sure, I'd love us to sign him.

As someone who lives kinda near Stoke and used to live in Peterborough when Etherington was a first team player at 17 I would say those who think he would be a crap signing are f*cking deranged. Wake up and smell the coffee. How many goals do you think Bent would get with Etherington supplying the ammo? Lots is the answer. I don't know what some of you guys are looking for sometimes but just a hint, Ronaldo is unlikely to join and if he did is unlikely to work with Bent.

I agree with that. I live not too far from Peterborough - which is why I wouldn't want to see us sign Joe Lewis - and watched Etherington as a kid too, so I've always kept tabs on him. He's actually had a very good season for Stoke and I wouldn't mind him at Villa at all; he's more direct than Downing, has more pace, and will go right at defenders rather than tending to float off them and look for a pass, ala Downing.

I think we need a couple of wide players if Downing goes: I'd have N'Zogbia as our main target but Etherington isn't a bad option.

Greg - not sure what your point is about the nine assists? That's a good total, no?

Albrighton - Right
N'Zogbia - Left
Etherington or that young Dutch chap - Backup

That will do.

More than that, the amount of times they were bailed out by Foster's heroics would indicate that they weren't even that good with the defensive game. 11 men behind the ball to help them out and they still conceded enough chances for Foster to constantly have to come to the rescue.

Etherington And given would both be solid decent signings in my view, both proven players at this level and not every signing has to have a resale value , we need a good mixture of youth and experience and I'd take a fit given over Friedal anyday.

If Downing goes and N'Zogbia comes in, then we'll still be short on wingers squad wise, so we'll need a back up to him and Albrighton.  We've just finished 9th and aren't expected to pull up any trees next season, so how good a player can we get to be our reserve winger?  When you also factor in the young age of our squad, then an experienced player like Etherington might be exactly what we need.

So I would take him as a back up.

I think Etherington is a good player, but at 30 years of age, I think he'd cost too much to be worth bringing in, especially as a squad player.
