I don't know why we are getting all het up about Downing
He is a good player yes-great crosser -decent engine-england international-probably a decent lad(i've not heard owt to the contrary)

but he's a bit one footed for my liking, totally bottles any sort of challenge where he may get hurt(understandable due to his leg break-but ash never bottled 'em) is useless in the air and is not very strong or mindbendingly quick.
Mark Albrighton could cover him if we play someone else on the right

Etherington could do a similar job for us on the left-I assume he would be half the price(ish) -just keep him away from the bookies!

SSSSSSHHHHHHH you prat! The way that lot are spending money we might actually get £20million!!!!!! Don't come here with your rational analysis you might cost us millions!

I, for one, am not, Bill. Just don't want us getting stiffed on the fee.

Redman, still convinced your club does things the right way? Thought tapping up was from the previous regime and manager. Downing will not be sold on the cheap as Barry wasn't, don't your club ever learn.
No offence mate but you might be a bit paranoid.

Once you accept that players, agents and clubs are all at it because it's impossible to enforce, it'll become clear.

The Barry approach was underhand and aggressive. I don't see how this compares.

I tried hard not to bite, but I will. This is different I agree. But only in the less blatant, much MORE underhand way. A Liverpool fan on a Villa site calling one of our players Stew as if he is already yours is a bit galling I have to say. If you cannot see you have been underhand tapping a player that 2 weeks before the close of the season was talking about signing a new deal, then you are either blind or so far up your own backside that all you see is red.
This is hearsay, isn't it? For all you know, Liverpool approached Villa, enquired about Downing and Villa informed him.

There's no media-driven campaign to unsettle the player and there's nobody at your end acting indignant this time.

If a deal is done, it's looks like it'll be done amicably.

As for the 'Stew' thing, I just got sick of typing 'Downing'. I've got no affection for the guy. In fact, I think we can do better.

The whole thing about what Downing is worth when compared to Young and/or Henderson isn't really the issue.  What is is what it will take for us to agree to the transfer.  Losing our two most creative players in one window would be a major blow, so we'll be resisting selling him on that basis.  And with 2 years left we have something behind us in that regard.  Also, we'll be rightly aggrieved that he's looking to leave after we bought him with an injury, let him play regardless of form as he got over it and then only had one good season from him.

So he'll go on our terms only and if that's £30m then it is and should nobody pay it he stays.

Simples.

You can. You are the greatest club in the world. Have you been to Anfield on a European night? It is the greatest experience in the world ever. Having plucked out England's greatest midfielder ever, Jordan Henderson, from the grasp of the European super weight that is Sunderland, you shouldn't lower your standards and look at our dross.
Or you could say that you have already been turned down by Young and Jones this summer because you aren't punching in the same league you seem think you are.

I have, during the famed 2005 Champions League semi-final against Chelsea. I was stood on the Kop. 'Meh' does not begin to cover it.

Not interested in what Liverpool do and they will be nowhere near the top 4 in any case , more fool them for spending £55m on henderson and Carroll who have potential but are from the real deal yet at the highest level-you can always count on the scousers for a laugh.

Just another half arsed club who used to be famous!

I agree totally. Whilst we might not be in much of a position to talk, I am certainly going to enjoy next season and watching the likes of teams such as Liverpool, stuffed full of over priced, over hyped talent, going nowhere fast and just making up the numbers. They, like the rest of us, will have to get used to the fact that they are unlikely to see their team win anything meaningful in the future for a very long time. Finishing anything lower than fourth just consigns you to the also rans these days and that is where Liverpool will be next season

Having spent some serious money.

If  Carroll stays fit all season, and Gerard finds form they will make the top 5.

Ohhhhhhkay so to bring things back to all things claret and blue, any fans know anything about Stephane Ruffier the GK linked from Monaco? Dont watch Frenchy footy so would like to know if he's worth pursuing. Cant make my mind up on Foster. Good keeper yes, wouldnt take long to settle as his families all here. But will SHA really sell to us and for a reasonable price? Not bloody likely! Maybe someone like Ruffier would be just as good an option aswell as cheaper.

Mickey Quinn reckons downing was in talks with Liverpool at the weekend- Wigan want £9m for nzogbia- bargain at that price.

That fat-twat is just spouts off Liverpool propaganda every oppoutunity. He is full of it....and a bellend.

Quite, he is by some distance the most biased, incomprehensible, fattest and thickest pundit on the radio, making Jason Cundy look as if he is in possession of an O Level. And that takes some doing...

If I'm reading this right, you seem to have taken offence that I don't rate one of your players especially highly. For that, I can only apologise.

Redman, I think you will be disappointed if you think Downing will come and play as a left winger. He has just had his best ever season playing on the right and cutting in, he was far less effective when on the left.
