If someone offered us £20million for Young I'd bite their hands off.

Isn't Ash out of contract in the summer?  Meaning that he will go on a free?

next summer...2012

Next summer. So he may well stay with us for another 16 months and then leave on a free.
No way can the club afford to lose that amount of money.........He will be sold

Robinson would be worth going for imo, I think that he would do well at VP. Westwood would be a good back up Keeper but he would expect to be no;1 wherever he goes.Other than that Scott Loach at Watford is a very good Keeper.
Outside of those plus Given I would think that we would need to look abroad.

i like Robinson a lot, too, he'd be a very good move.

Plus I think he would move to us - always seems to have some rapport with our fans
Although last time we tried to buy him he didn't want to know.

When was that Dave ?

Of course he will but for the same sort of money Barry went for and not the sort that Milner went for. 10-12 mil tops.  Plus it takes 3.5 mil off the wage bill.  If we go down then he won't be the only good player to leave.

Aston Villa manager David O'Leary has admitted defeat in his attempt to bring England goalkeeper Paul Robinson to Villa Park, as chairman Doug Ellis is unable to match his Leeds salary.
TheYorkshire club accepted a bid of £3.5million from villa, but a move collapsed when personal terms could not be agreed.

Now O'Leary is preparing to turn his attentions elsewhere for a new goalkeeper.

He said: "I doubt if the deal will be back on because Villa weren't prepared to match his terms at Leeds.

"He loves me, but not that much to come."

Agree we are looking at around £12m for young due to his contract running down, what is the sell on agreement we had with Watford?

If that was the case then you cannot blame him for not wanting to move for a wage cut.

Jarvis was fantastic today against Spurs, cross after top quality cross into the box, the sort of thing Ashley Young used to do in 2008.

I think he's one we should consider making a move for in the summer.

So we ended up with Sorensen instead of Robinson. Had completely forgotten that.

Rumour today, Bayern had a look at Young saturday.

If Ash won't sign it looks like we will get top whack for him because he will be in demand.

Anything over 15million and we are laughing.

I just cannot see him wanting to stay, if he wants to test himself a the top level, then I think he will go!!

I'd be loathe to lose him but we have two top wingers, could get another one (yes, Jarvis would be useful)  fairly cheap and there are better or more natural attacking central midfielders than Young out there. But I'd like what it would say if he stayed and signed a new contract. He just needs to be taken off set piece duty unless he found his 2007/2008 targeting system.

The flipside of that is Ash seems to be a hub of the team. He gets on with most of them and is very popular. He never stops running and is almost always fit, motivated and ready to play.
It's a hell of a lot to replace in one player.

I'm not so concerned about Ash going as I was when O'Neill was here.  At least if we get some dosh for him GH  can and probably will look worldwide (or at least further than West Ham or Celtic) for a similar type of player,  and possibly a better, more consistent, less frustrating one to replace him.  As opposed to the prospect of Aiden McGeady stepping into his big boots.

The reason Robinson didn't sign for us was because he (quite rightly) cannot stand that ****** O'Leary.

At least that is what I remember being told around the time.
