The last time we beat a "big" team in the FA Cup was in the third round in 2001 when we beat Newcastle after a replay.

Newcastle 2001 (after a replay)
Leeds and Everton 2000
Tottenham 1992
Arsenal 1974

They're our only wins against "big" clubs in the last 40 seasons.

I didn't bother looking back any further - it was too depressing.

I am with Hawkeye. Man City are actually not very good atm whatever their results. They look confused. They are a bit like Spuds, losing 4-0 at the moment to Fulham and anything can happen. Expectations are very high there. Not ours.

I am unopologetic at being a GH "sack him" and I and others had good reason.

However, there is a new spirit, our youngsters are impressive, our reserves are impressive and GH appears to have won over the core of the first team. I still give RL a lot of the credit mind but yes I am confident.

Barry can go to waste but by G we miss Milner. We will give them a good fight on current form.

We do, I believe he is a big miss.  But reading this thread they have on him is rather interesting.....

It's only Citeh. We have just beaten them. And, for all their money, they have still won fuck all® since 1976 (Oops! Sorry, I forgot to check Wikipediathebastionofalltruth to learn that they were 3rd Div champs in 98-99 and 2nd Div champs in 99-00). Villa to prevail.

But I hope it's Counteh.

Tokyo- don't worry too much about 'history". Teams and times change. I mean including Leeds as a big Team for example. Yes they were. Now they are not. Maybe, just maybe our time is at hand.

Been saying that for fifty years...... :-/  but there have been a couple of highlights.

I included Leeds because they were big at the time we played them - they finished third that season.

On a positive note, we've beaten Notts County a couple of times in that time.

If we're going to win it we have to play a tie like this at some point.

and it's better to play  a tie like this now rather than later in the Cup. Last years  we had  very kind draws   and than got thumped in the Semi. That was not much fun. We are not the sort of Club who should be happy to just go to Wembley.  We need to face  up to the mammoth and eat it!

Citeh's gobby fans may be delighted but I don't think Mancini will be too thrilled. He will have to field a strong team to beat us.

Tokyo - I was agreering with you. They Were a 'big team'. But looked what happened to them and to Nottingham Forest for example.

Man U were a Big Team with Best, Law, Charlton, Kidd et al and we beat them when in Division three. In a semi final.

There is something about Man City that just does not fit. I do not see them as being long term. Even with all that cash. Good players are being overlooked and losing confidence and direction. We have to look no further that Milner for that. And Arsenal have won nothing with fantastic players.

There is a core, an in built strength to Aston Villa at the moment built upon many years of  investment in Youth and reserves. It just might be our time. They trained, fought and learned with the badge, were not bought.

I thought GH was destroying that which is why I was against him. Now it appears he has actually respected our back up plan, our depth, embraced it even.

If he can contnue to garner the support of RL, the Board and the players we can be as good as any.

I still think that this squad will beat Manchester City at Middle Eastlands.

Whatever our recent history against so called 'big Clubs'.

So if we win this then we won't get a big club in the next round?  Or the round after?  That's a relief.

Bit of a cliche Dave. I'd rather do it the Millwall way and take our chances against the last man standing in the final.

Fuck me. We're not c***ing Wigan! We are a big club. Not a Man United or an Arsenal but in the next tier down. We should look to matches against everyone in terms of giving them a damn good game. Man City last Saturday, the draw earlier this season and the win last against Man United, the second half against Arsenal...

To read some of the comments on this thread you would think we were Crawley Town looking forward to a trip at Man United. Dear me.

We as others have said we (as a relatively big club) need to face down the big boys and beat them. We CAN do that so I don't understand this defeatist nonsense. I'm not sure if we will beat Man City SHOULD WE HAVE TO FACE THEM but I'm not certain we will get beaten. We have in recent years tended not to face these clubs only because we have been on the end of a shock from a Leicester or QPR.

We're not in the next tier down at all. We ARE a big club. We are their equals or betters. Always have been, always will be.
