I wonder why he switched papers. It can't have been about the quality of the product.
There were around 400,000 reasons per year that he switched papers.

It would seem so

Samuel's start date at the Mail is under negotiation; industry sources have told MediaGuardian.co.uk that he will be paid a salary in excess of £400,000.

August 2010     journalists = Villa have no money
Jan 2011             Villa sign Bent for lots of money
                          journalists = Villa are desperate

I wish these journalists would stop quoting £24m..... the fee was £18m. The rest are add-ons, and for the amount to reach £6m, making the final eventual fee £24m, Bent will probably have had to have scored 100-plus league goals for us, shot us into Champions League football, made 200 PL appearances and reached 50 caps for England. In which case, we'd have the best striker in the country.

And Martin Samuel... I liked him when he wrote for the Times, gone off him now he's at the Mail. I wonder why he switched papers. It can't have been about the quality of the product.

and they keep saying £10 million form spurzz.. It wasnt £10 million...   any thing to make us look ripped off...     but it was ok for spurzz to sign him for 16.5 mill..

I'd rather be desperate and have Darren Bent banging in the goals than have no goalscorer and no goals.

That's the key point they are missing here.

Just saw the pictures of his first training session on the official site. One picture got me worried though,it was of Heskey closley marking him, with Ivanhoe's track record i wouldn't let him anywhere near Bent!!

Martin Samuel isn't paid that sort of money just to report dull, staid facts. He's there to give his views and to do it in an entertaining way and, to my mind, he does a pretty good job even if I don't always agree with it.

Many on this site seem to have a real problem with a free press and want it stifled so that they only report what we want to read.

read the entire sunderland thread its page 11 before anyone goes oh shit. before then its al op bashing lol.
 interesting to see this tho.

The Situation

I've just got onto a computer after being told the bad news.Firstly, thanks Skunk Hater for the information, you were spot on again as usual.Secondly, my own thoughts. It's a shame Bent wants to leave and I can only think things aren't right for him behind the scenes. Bent handed in the request yesterday according to SAFC, so either he's done a Cana and sorted the deal out with his agent behind our backs or Villa have had a deal on the table for a while, we've rejected it and Bent's handed in the transfer request then. Either way it seems strange that he'd leave us for Villa given our respective league positions and future prospects so I'd suspect things haven't been right for him behind the scenes and he wants to get away, hopefully we'll find out in time and both SAFC and Bent will be honest to us as it's the least we deserve. Many very good players have left this football club over the years and if anyone wants out then I wouldn't stand in their way. We're SAFC and we'll still be here long after Bent has finished..

not the same situation off here is it by any chance?
I swear to God I don't have an account on that awful forum. I claimed the username The Situation first...

I think they are very similar to us, a big club with a seemingly good owner who backs the manager without interference, we are both always going to struggle to attract the very best players and keep hold of the ones we do have. They are just going to have to take it on the chin because it wont be the last time either club loses a player they want to keep.

Plus unfortunately for them, Sunderland is an absolute shit hole that nobody in their right mind would want to live in unless they were born there.
