Villa squad from 1970 - where are they now?
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:07:43 AM »

Some are, sadly, no longer with us. Quite a few will never have made the grade.
Then again, many of these had great careers.

Don't know how to enlarge this picture. A few double clicks might do it.

Double clicks enlarge the pic for me.
I will do a couple of these.
George Curtis...Saw him on TV just the other day, Midlands Today item with something going on at the Ricoh. Apparently retired but still living round Coventry, looked well and fit and strong enough that you wouldnt want to pick a fight with him.

Mick Wright....He was my boss in my first ever job in about 1979, he ran the Castle Bromwich branch of British Car Auctions. He lived out Measham direction, and for all I know he is still there and still with BCA.

Leo Crowther(2nd row 3rd from left)....Leo was on the coaching staff and is alive and well in quiet retirement in a village near Lichfield. I know this as he was pals with my late Dad and Ive done bits and pieces of work at his house over the years. Hes a lovely chap and keeps in contact with Ray Graydon who of course isnt on this picture, joining Villa the following year.

Anybody know where Jimmy Brown is these days ? He lived round Sutton for years, I can remember a couple of times when we nabbed a pitch for an impromptu sunday morning game on  Rectory Park Jimmy asking to join in. 4/5 of us round him unable to get the ball.

I used to see Ron Wylie and Charlie Aitken most weeks at Villa Park until they moved our seats. Chico is often there as a guest of the Former Players Association which is run by Neil Rioch of course.

Jimmy Brown was last heard of working for the council on a play scheme in Kitts Green or somewhere similar. Pat McMahon & Willie Anderson live in America. Andy Lochhead's retired and living in Burnley.

Andy Lochhead's retired and living in Burnley.

It was great to see him when he came back with Burnley last season. Not quite as good as his magnificent return as coach of Oldham but good enough for me. I wonder if there is any footage of that occasion. It still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck thinking about it, 35 years later.

I remember going to the league cup defeat under O`Leary at Burnley. Andy Lochhead was still helping with the hospitality there. Tony Morley was getting all the cheers down on the pitch having also played for both clubs. Meanwhile I was telling anybody who listened that we should be cheering the bald headed bloke standing quietely by the tunnel because if it hadnt been for his goals we may never have got back up to be able to sign the likes of Morley later.

If I has spotted Andy Lochhead there, I would have started up the 'Andy, Andy Lochhead in the air' song.  Another one that used to get sung was 'na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, Andy Lochhead'.

Brian Tiler, Dave Simmons, Brian Godfrey and Vic Crowe are sadly no longer with us.
Mick Hoban became a pioneer in the NASL, then worked for Nike in the USA, still there as far as I'm aware.
Barry Lynch still lives in Birmingham.
Lew Chatterley is a sports coach at Winchester College.
Keith Bradley runs a bar/restaurant for Brits in Mojacar Playa, Spain.
Pat McMahon and Willie Anderson stayed in the US after finishing playing, Pat was a copywriter in an Oregon ad agency, and Willie worked as a salesman at a radio station there.
Lionel Martin worked in the motor trade.
Dave Rudge has lived in Torquay for years.
Jimmy Brown still works for Birmingham City Council at various leisure centres, saw him last season at VP with a group of kids.
Geoff Crudgington coached the keepers at Plymouth and is still there I think.

He's no longer there that's for sure, I have a mate looking into when he might have left.

Lionel Martin worked in the motor trade.
He used to work at Startin's on Orphanage Road, in charge of Motor Parts. I knew him there as I used to have a part time job, after school, washing the cars there. Lovely bloke, very humble. I didn't even know who he was until a few of the mechanics (all noses) told me he used to play for the Villa.

No idea where he is now.

I thought he was the Service Receptionist there, at least he was when I dropped my Cavalier in there for a service, must be nearly 20 years ago now.  I remember saying to him "A Lionel Martin once played for the Villa" only to be shocked to find out it was him.  If I remember correctly, he was involved with Tamworth at the time.

Keith Bradley runs a bar/restaurant for Brits in Mojacar Playa, Spain.

I've been there and was introduced to him by a Blue who has a holiday home nearby, when finding out I was a Villa fan he went and got his scrapbook out and spent a while chatting, very nice guy. I hadn't actually heard of him but of course didn't say that.

If you track him down, ask him how he managed to scoop the ball over the bar from one yard out against Reading in front of the Witton End.
