We can't afford Darren Bent.  Why are people talking as if there's even a sniff of a chance that we might sign him?

Probably the faint hope that randy has looked at the table and gone "bugger it, here's 30m".

Randy's no fool when it comes to football. He'll know a lot of our problems stem from not having a reliable experienced prolific striker.
And he's also stinking rich. Therefore...

Bent would be a fantastic signing.

I'd also like us to sign another Centre Midfielder. Petrov was way off the pace yesterday.

Or give Delph a chance when he's fit.

Yeah he was treading water yesterday. Not sure if Adam is the answer, good passer, but looks a bit slow.

The point of trying to swap a player to offset cash is twofold.  Firstly we are not a cash rich club at the moment, certainly not in comparison to other members of the Prem.  Secondly, we have a number of players that either we, as fans, or they as players would rather see playing elsewhere, so in a swap we both help to control the wage budget and move on some of the disaffected or deadwood members of the squad.

I'm not advocating getting rid of the like of Downing though, he has a role to play in our future and the cash offset we'd recieve for him would be too small. However, a player such as Ireland that I don't see having a future with us sadly would seem to make sense.

We shouldn't play 2 out and out wingers at the same time anyway.  This is one of the reasons why our midlfield is so easily overrun and why we are too reliant on crosses rather playing through the middle and bringing the best out of Gabby etc.  Losing Downing would no big loss if we got Bent and if AY goes, then so be it.  We would have the money to replace him and still have MA.  I would play only one winger + Macoun + Bannan/Delph + a beefy bone crunching midfield big scary muthafuka to protect the midfield and reinforce the defence.   Any suggestions who we could buy to fill this chopper like role?

Delph, Gardner, Bannan, Hogg, Herd and Makoun make up a very young midfield group so there is room for another senior player or two (as we play with three in the middle more often than not) and I think Reo Coker and Petrov (along with Ireland and Salifou sooner perhaps) will be off in the summer and probably rightly so.
Charlie Adam and Moussa Sissoko, of the rumoured links, would do very nicely.

The other thing with Downing is i'm not sure Houllier intends to play 2 wingers when he starts to shape his team. given that, he may be willing to let him go.

Bent would be quality. I always resented Mon for not buying him when he was availiable. Proven striker which we are desperate fro. I wouldn't be keen on losing Downig but for a striker...Yes I would

Good point , we have 3 very good wingers at Villa , the problem is Houlier is probably trying to play all 3 at once as they are all good players and then AY goes into the hole...    I would prefer a top creative midfielder and keep the 2 of 3 on the flanks...  thats why you could lose Downing to get that top striker (if true)...  and having the wingers is only good if you have a goal scorer to put the chances in...

Who said we cant afford him? Who said what the deal entails and if any cash will actually change hands?
And people are talking about there being a sniff of a chance because there is some sort of hullaballoo behind the scenes to suggest there is with trustworthy people involved and not just gobshites.

Well, we'll see.  We're not going to be signing Darren bent though are we.

I dont know. Some people behind the scenes think there's a very good chance.
If it is him. If it's not, it's a player of some note.
