if you assume all footballers are overpaid, arrogant wankers perhaps signing Barton isn't so bad.

I would need to assume all footballers like to stump their cigars out in youth players eyes before I thought that.

If Houllier is thinking of bringing the sewer rat Barton in, then lerner & faulkner need to apply the brakes now
Let's not forget it was Houllier that imported E H Diouf onto these shores so can't put this past him

where are all these Johnny Foreigner types we thought we'd be signing ?

I was thinking the same thing - what would peoples reaction have been if MON had signed Kyle Walker and Charlie Adam?

Houllier has had 10 days of one transfer window to source the best players available.

MON had four years, and bar two, every single one of his signings was already playing in England or Scotland.

The notion that English players are best, or foreign ones are best is flawed - we should be looking as far and wide as we can to find the best players possible in our budget.

Houllier has barely had a chance to start getting players in, so we'll see how that goes, but the myopia of MON's transfer policy is one of the things we're paying for now.

We're definitelt talking to Makoun. He's a foreigner you know. Plays abroad too. Not like Dustin Hoffman's Tootsie, I mean he plays abroad.

Somehow I doubt his dickishness would have been made apparent until he actually came to this country, so it's an unfair comparison to make. He was signed on the back of a very good world cup campaign.

And Houllier should have free reign to sign whatever players he feels appropriate. Chairmen / CEO should getting involved in the selection process always leads to trouble.

All points I agree with, except the last one, but I do feel there would be pages of anti-MON rhetoric over those two players.  And I think you do too!

As it goes I think Houllier's stratergy, or at least what it seems to be thus far, is right.  Now is not the time to try and bed in a number of overseas players all at once - we can't afford it!  Existing PL players who can come in and hit the ground running is what we need, such as Bridge and Adam.

A lot better than if he'd signed Robbie Keane, Aiden McGeady and Jermaine Jenas.

Too right...what was he thinking of when he signed Milner and A.Young? Especially after selling Milner and hardly getting anything for him, apart from Ireland that is (what a deal!).

Nicely put.

Its nice to see the one he has brought in, so far, score on his début too.

MON doing anything at the start of the Window? Is this a joke?

Walker was excellent on Saturday and on loan is a good deal, if he turns out to be not up for it then no harm done.

Adam reminds me of Barry, quality left foot, not blessed with pace but good eye for a pass/goal and reliable penalty taker. Whilst Barry has gone backwards since leaving B6 Adam has and could still improve. 3-4M I think is a good deal for him at 25.

Pepole are looking for the foregin signings as they are perceived to be better value for money. I would prefer (in our current situation) players in January that at least have some idea of what it takes to play in this country rather than waiting for them to get up to speed.

If Houllier can get the right player UK based at a sensible price (that includes wages) then I don't see why we would all cry out for anything other!

The same as he was thinking when he bought Harewood, Sidwell, Beye, Knight, Routledge and so on I'd guess, he didn't give me the impression he had too many original thoughts, especially if his tactics were anything to go by

That would be a valid point, had I said that MON's transfer policy was a total failure. I didn't, I said it was myopic, and short sighted.

UK based players cost more money, want more in salary and if you fish in that pool only, you've a limited number of players to pick from - hence us, now, with a load of not very good, high earning players we can't get rid of.

I take your point but if he had shown a bit more faith in some of the above rather than closing ranks and picking his favourites who knows?

So far this season Dunne or Collins have made Knight look like Franco Baresi and Carew has made Harewood ......

Granted still shite!
