Sell Young? Do some of our fans actually want us to be relegated??

Yes, I truly believe some of them do, it will make their ranting look almost profound.

Personally speaking, I want the manager sacked, and occasionally rant to that effect, because I think he'll get us relegated. Don't want him to though. Some think that selling Young to get others in, given his performances lately, wil betterl serve our interests.

I think most of us want what's best for the club, but have different opinions on how to go about it.

Young's contribution yesterday - as with many games recently - was poor; second goal aside his input was neglible and the sending-off pathetic. Furthermore his apparent desire to play through the middle is compromising the rest of the team. I'd either get a commimtent from him to knuckle down, perform to the standards of whcih he is capable and commit to some self-development - in return for a good new contract - or sell him, and pronto.
For those who think selling him would send out the wrong signals, I'd make sure the money garnered is quickjly re-invested in quality players who will add something to this squad.
And for other senior players who think they're bigger than the club, I'd also get rid: Pires, Dunne, Warnock, Downing - they all need to knuckle down and start grafting!

Pires is a complete waste of space. He needs to go.

Nick 0 - Jelly-Nailers 1

Nick retires to settee to see King Kenny get stuffed.

Just can't agree we should offer improved deals when players nearer the start of their contract than the end.  If it's a four year deal then after two years is probably about right.  And only Barry had gone into his last 12 months so far after the Liverpool bids.

I'm more concerned as to why we can't keep them!!

i think the reason we can't keep them is because of when we negotiate.at least partly anyway. Its human nature really.  You offer a pay rise to player 2+ years till his contract runs out then getting a deal elsewhere seems a very long way off. Offer him one in the last 2 years and they keep their options open. Just had a look at our contracts and we have 12 players with less than 2years left and another 7 that get to 2 years this summer. they need to sort it out.

So at a time when we're trying to manage the wage bill we are now advocating giving players a pay rise every year as that is the inevitable consequence of a new contract. It's completely unsustainable.

ok, my figures about the number of players nearing the end of their contracts is a bit simplistic. Some of them we don't want, also you don't offer long contracts to players over 30. But the ones we do want should be nailed down long term and if they don't want to sign we get rid. After all its going to cost us a lot to replace them

John I agree and that is why I was saying at the midpoint of a 4 year deal, and not always a big rise, but putting any rises on continued performance, goals, appearances etc.

Young is reminding me of the kid at school who wanted to do everything. The only thing he doesn't do is goal kick's.....yet.I just wish he would concentrate on being the bloody good winger he was.

Greg, which of our players do you think we should currently be offering improved contracts to?

That is a mischevious question Dave. Contracts should be dealt with in the summer, and if we have players 2 years into 4 year deals then the clubs should decide during the close season IF they are keen for the player to stay beyond the final 2 years.

well cuellar's contract for a start. you may not want him, but its a hell of a lot of money to write off for a club not exactly flush with it

This all started by me saying i would sell Ashley young for £20m tomorrow. Now through Ozzjim and Gregnash`s assesments. I am even clearer on what i stated. This is about protecting the club, and even though he stated he is "going nowhere" if/when his  decision changes we then have to give him more money to stay and by then his valuation has halfed. Someone pointed out when was the last time Ash was the difference between us and winning against another team. And personally i cannot remember. We have offered him the new contract and he has refused. He is not going to be the one factor that will keep us up on recent performances. So get top money and re-invest now .........

Maybe it's because he has little faith in those around him ?

Remember, he was found out as an out and out winger, so MON moved him to a that role.

I agree though, he was at his best attacking defences in and around the box rather than picking the ball up in his own half much of the time.

We shouldn't sell Ash, it would be a big mistake.
