We need goals, and we need them fast. We're in a dog fight now. Whoever we can get, even on loan to the end of the season, if they're more likely to score than who we've got now, then we need to get them in. Keane, yes, Bendtner, yes...

Personally I don't think changing the manager now could be anything other than counter-productive. Houllier needs to be given at least one transfer window. If we still look poor in the summer then he should go in May and give someone else the whole summer to fix the problems in at the back and up front.

Smithies looked a bit on the short side when I watched him the other day.

Daily Mail reckon Walker has already signed on loan and Sidwell has moved to Wolves rather than West Ham.

We need the midfield sorted before anything else, no creativity at all. It was curious how much more dangerous we looked when Dunne started throwing his weight around in the forward line.

To be honest, such is his girth, there's always a pretty high statistical chance that any ball pinged in his general direction will bounce off him.

which is bizarre when you think we've got Young, Downing, Albrighton, Ireland, Delph, Bannan... all creative midfielders, all potentially very good if not great. You're right though. So what's going on?

2 centre midfielders is a must. Replace Petrov & NRC.

As i've said on another thread Paul this is the same midfield we all agreed wasn't good enough last season.
Other clubs strengthened we didn't, stay still and your dead. Got no qualms with Petrovs endeavour it's just that he's too old and not very good. NRC isn't that old but he's not good enough, we could all see it last season so i don't understand those that say we're not trying, i think we did try last night but we're not a good side and to be honest never were.

If we signed 2 in there we would be fine. Maybe makoun will sign but we still need a creator. What about Krancjaer from spurs

Steve Sidwell joins Wolves on loan

Thursday 6th January 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Steve Sidwell joins Wolves on loan

Wolves today sealed their first signing of the transfer window with the arrival of Steve Sidwell on loan – and he could be joined by Villa team-mate Carlos Cuellar.

Sidwell did a U-turn after West Ham dragged their feet over the finances as they try to complete as many as 15 deals this month.

Instead, after passing a medical with the Hammers, the 28-year-old midfielder was at Molineux for last night’s 1-0 win over his former club Chelsea to sign until the end of the season, when his contract runs out.

Wolves had already agreed to pay his £40,000-a-week wages and a loan fee of around £250,000, before West Ham gave the man for whom Villa paid £5million the chance to move closer to his London home.

But with the Hammers dallying, Sidwell decided to sign for Wolves after all and watched the game from the directors’ box with captain Karl Henry and Eric Walters, who is agent to both players.

The former Reading star will now be reunited with some familiar faces from his Royals days after already ‘sounding out’ Marcus Hahnemann, Stephen Hunt and Kevin Doyle.

But, before the deal was confirmed, manager Mick McCarthy was remaining tight-lipped.

He said: “I haven’t spoken to him, so there’s nothing much I can say. A fee had been agreed with the clubs beforehand. His family were closer to West Ham and I had no gripe with that at all.

“But if he’s available and we can agree a fee and terms I’d take him in a heartbeat.”

Told Sidwell was at Molineux, McCarthy joked: “He’s a Wolves fan – didn’t you know?”

Cuellar is the third Villa centre-back Wolves have targeted this month.

But they have been blocked from signing Richard Dunne – at least for this month – because he is back in Villa’s team.

They have also cooled on Curtis Davies after an enquiry, because of concerns over his reliability and the fee.

With McCarthy having targeted Premier League experience and someone right-sided, 29-year-old Cuellar, a £7.8million signing from Glasgow Rangers in August 2008, is seen as a good fit.

Letting Carlos go would be insane.

Surely that's made up?

Hell, why not just loan them Young or Albrighton if we're loaning our better players out as well as the shit ones.

Letting him go to Wolves would be the action of an insaniac.

I do agree with you given this situation, though I am no great fan of his. I think he is hugely over-rated to be honest and more part of the problem than we realise...if that makes sense! Which I know it probably doesn't

All I can say is he'd better have some unbelievable players lined up if there's any truth to this.

I haven't a lot of time for Carlos but he's done ok the last couple of games and we need to get back to being hard to beat, we are harder to beat with him in the team. I cant see there being anything in this.
