From reading GH comments on Forfana, I gather the deal has collapsed because the lad is asking for too much in wages. A balance between ability and wages.

He's heard about the multi millionaires at Villa and wants some of it, obviously putting money before ambition.

In fairness with the state of the team at the moment, i'd want quite a hefty wage to join.

Houllier seems to be mentioning Fofana`s "strong personality" this may mean he could be disruptive to the other young lads. And did not want to disrupt the harmony amongst them ......

He probably found out how much the two stars he'd be replacing (Sidwell,Ireland) were on.

I think it is great news if true, Martin will have paid him what ever he wants.

Villa are going through transition and one of the things changing is stupid wages to unproven or average players.

But if Houllier can't even attract French players he's worked with who can he attract (other than Pires)?

How loosely we use the word star, the other night i was watching a game not sure which one now, where a player cut in from the left with pace beat two players slid the ball across the goal under the keepers arms to a teammate standing a metre out who tapped it in. Who celebrated as if he had just done the impossible, who did the camera follow i felt sorry for the playmaker , he was totally forgotten, and when i looked at the guy jumping up and down i yelled at the screen WANKER.

I don't think the Fofana deal is dead. I got thinking about it last night so this is just a theory. Because of the new PL registration rules, we can only submit a 25 man squad. Right now, Houllier needs players that can play immediately, so why tie up a spot with a player that might not play until February due to this injury? Also, you can't just sign him and have him rehabilitate here because if all squad spots are taken at the close of the squad registration window and he recovers you can't just add him in. I think for this deal to get done in January, the following has to happen. Towards the end of January, Houllier has completed all of the deals he would like. That is, all players bought and sold. If then, a spot is open he could complete this deal, register the player and have him play when he is fit. Otherwise, there's no point. The player may as well go home and play in France until the summer.

I think this might still happen but maybe a deadline day transfer.

Tweet Villa have today pulled the plug on a move for French starlet Gueida Fofana but are close to finalising a loan deal for Jamaica international Omar Cummings.

Le Havre midfielder Fofana is out of contract in the summer and flew to Birmingham for talks over a cut-price switch to Villa in the January transfer window.

He has been compared with Patrick Vieira and, as revealed in yesterday’s Express & Star, Villa had been in advanced negotiations.

But slight medical concerns have prompted Villa to put the deal on ice for the time being and concentrate on other transfer targets.

Villa boss Gerard Houllier admitted he has been impressed with Fofana, and it is possible the club may seek to resurrect the deal in the summer, but they will not be making a move for the Ligue 2 player at the moment.

“The Fofana deal is not done yet and I doubt it will be done,” said Houllier. “For the moment an agreement has not been reached. He’s got potential, he’s a 19-year-old player, very mature with a strong personality.

“He’s the captain of the France Under-19s that won the European Championships, but I’ve got other young players and you’ve got have a balance in terms of wages and abilities. It’s more likely not to happen.”

A loan move for Colorado Rapids attacker Cummings is on the cards though after the player impressed Houllier when he trained with the first-team squad at Bodymoor Heath.

The 28-year-old forward, who has won 21 caps for Jamaica, would join Villa on the back of a good season in Major League Soccer where he scored eight goals and contributed 12 assists in 28 games.

“He will be here probably until March,” said Houllier. “We looked at some videos and said we would have him here on trial. He looks quick although he’s a bit jet-lagged.”

It's the last bit that made me laugh.  Didn't Jo Venglos watch Peter Withe on a video.
