Agree with the arguments against Keane but I think within the confines of the January window, in our current predicament, looking for someone with Premiership experience I think he's probably about the best option available to us - as long as it's a short term deal.

Am I right in thinking Postma would have been on the receiving end, rather than given?

You can often tell where a player is in terms of their careers by who is sniffing about.

Compare and contrast:

R Keane.  Blues, Villa, Wolves.

A Young: Man Utd, Spurs, Liverpool.

A lot if it is public perception based on where a club is deemed to be and is often unfair.  It is however pretty damming and can't be placed at the feet of Martin O Neill.  To change our league position and perception will requires us to go after better than average players on the up but we'll see next month if that's where the club is.  As others have said, some kids form France that might take 6 months to adjust are a gamble in our current predicament.  If Robbie Keane, 3 years past his best is where we are then it's difficult not to think that the past 4 years of progress have counted for jack shit and we are uncomfortably close to being where we were pre-Lerner.  I'm not sure what to make of it all to be honest.

We are in serious trouble. Buying potential from the continent won't help us if we will not see them settled till next season.

I hope the club realise that as well as long term planning we need some short term fixes to get us out of this hole. Keane is good enough and experienced enough at Premier League level to make an impact over the last half of the season. He is capable of scoring 7-8 goals that may make the difference at the end of the season.

More importantly, he may go to one of our rivals and do the same for them. It's for this reason I wouldn't let the like of Carew go to Albion or Ireland to Fulham.

That's what I'm saying. We should go for both striker options as Supertom says. Time for Randolph to get his chequebook out, as unlike many people on here, I don't think he's gone mad with the money, considering how much we've recouped. We also have plenty to sell to raise funds further, I would definitely get rid of those 2 suggested as if reports are to be believed are a disruption, and Dunne also. And Sidwell, Davies and Osbourne who are plainly not good enough. That should get the wages down.

Happy Christmas Clark. Watched Christmas Vacation again the other night. As a new poster you may not know that your splendid rant at your boss when he didn't give you a Christmas bonus is/or was the word filter for Steve Hodge on this very forum.

I know the film pretty much word for word, so yes I have noticed!
 ;)

Robbie Keane is no more the answer to our current striking problems than Peter Withe.

He's shot and anyone who has watched him in the past year or two can see it. I'd be deeply unhappy if we signed him and my expectations are not high.

I'm reading more into Ashley Young's absence yesterday with an "injury"
I fear he is being off-loaded in Jan

If there were one thing we could do to simultaneously take away any remaining positivity at the club, to reinforce and give credence to the "selling club" stuff we keep hearing, to deflate the supporters any more, to make a truly shit season even worse, to make relegation a real possibility, to make it look like we'd given up, and to flag up our ambition accordingly, it would be to sell Ashley Young in January.

I understand why players insist they don't want to stay at clubs and get offloaded in the summer, but to sell a player like that in January could only be about one thing, and that would be the slightly increased transfer fee we'd get from having a further six months on his contract.

Dont want to sound patronising, but because of recent results I think people are panicing and thinking short term.

There is not a chance we're going to go down, infact I'd be willing to bet anyone that we'll finish top half.

Robbie Keane probably could offer something for 18 months, but he'd command 60k a week for four years. That's exactly the same problem we've got at the moment with Dunne, Beye and Heskey. That is crippling.

Spurs got the new investment, spent big and grew with it, got close to top 4, changed their manager after he failed, fell back a bit, sold all their best players for massive profits, reinvested the money cleverly in youth and came back even better.

That is exactly the model we need to copy, the Barry money went on Delph. £6m profit and we get someone potentially better and 10 years younger.

We need to do the same with the Ash and Milner money.

Until last Christmas Modric was earning 20k a week. Assou-Ekotto was earning 20k until a fortnight ago. Now they're getting top tier wages as they're Champions League footballers, but they've still got their best years ahead of them.

Keane isn't the answer. Spurs are clever trying to get rid. He's a classic Newcastle or West Ham signing.

If we do sign him it should be very short term. Tell him he's got until the end of this season to earn himself another 12 months.
