I thought our problem was the last manager filled the squad with expensively paid players with a limited shelf life on their last big pay day. So Keane would help how? He's not good enough for spurs so i don't see why their cast-offs are good enough for us.

I would prefer someone younger myself, but he knows where the back of the net is, and we are in one of those positions where someone proven might get us out of a hole. Only if the fee is cheap enough mind. In actual fact I don't think it will happen anyway, and I'm hoping Houllier starts to prove his worth in Jan by unearthing a gem from the continent who scores 15 goals before the end of the season.

I like many on here think that Carew will be gone but dont think Keane is the answer at his age.

We are in serious trouble. Buying potential from the continent won't help us if we will not see them settled till next season.

I hope the club realise that as well as long term planning we need some short term fixes to get us out of this hole. Keane is good enough and experienced enough at Premier League level to make an impact over the last half of the season. He is capable of scoring 7-8 goals that may make the difference at the end of the season.

More importantly, he may go to one of our rivals and do the same for them. It's for this reason I wouldn't let the like of Carew go to Albion or Ireland to Fulham.

I don't want Keane.  I don't know who I do want but Keane isn't it.  Too old, too expensive and a journeyman.

Now were not going to threaten the European places, maybe Man City will loan us a couple of decent reserves.

I think our chances of staying up would improve if we let those two transfers go through.

We should not be selling to any of the clubs we're in a delegation scrap with (Ireland aside)

Carew to Albion would be lunacy

I think we need two strikers in to be honest. Lets go for Keane (i'm not keen but he's ready and waiting and available) as well as promising foreign youngster. Gabby is well off his best. Fonzie needs more playing time, and Heskey is perennially injured. Carew is pretty much out the door now.

I'd like to see 3-4 coming in next window, and 4-5 going out. That won't happen. I think we'll probably only see 2 coming in. But if we want to get comfortable, we're desperately short on the sort of quality Houllier wants for the style he wants.

Given could be a great signing if we bring him in.

I'm not sure Given has been the same keeper since Marlon Harewood ruptured his bowel a few years ago. Not the most commanding keeper but a brilliant shot stopper. Keane would be an option if we are playing 442. He might score the goals to keep us up but long term is hardly an option. Both players would be expected to jump at the chance to play for Villa at this stage of their careers but people are missing out on one crucial fact. Given and Keane in particular have been mates with Richard Dunne going way back. Keane and Dunne are both from the same part of Dublin and played underage all the way up together. Both players will have been briefed fully on the shambles at Villa Park and unless both are incredibly desperate I can't see either joining us in January.

With Houlliers position possibly becoming untenable over the next couple of weeks we will find it hard to bring anyone in permanently. It's very well selling 9 players for peanuts but if we can only get a few loans in, another injury crisis would relegate us.

That's what I'm saying. We should go for both striker options as Supertom says. Time for Randolph to get his chequebook out, as unlike many people on here, I don't think he's gone mad with the money, considering how much we've recouped. We also have plenty to sell to raise funds further, I would definitely get rid of those 2 suggested as if reports are to be believed are a disruption, and Dunne also. And Sidwell, Davies and Osbourne who are plainly not good enough. That should get the wages down.

Happy Christmas Clark. Watched Christmas Vacation again the other night. As a new poster you may not know that your splendid rant at your boss when he didn't give you a Christmas bonus is/or was the word filter for Steve Hodge on this very forum.
