I can't believe any Villa fans are welcoming the thought of him leaving though.

I don't welcome the thought of him leaving. But I don't fancy the drawn out saga of him not signing new contract, and us having to sell him in a cut price deal because he has less than a year to go.

He is playing well at the moment, but his crossing has is not up to the standard it once was and he is hardly a goal threat, even when playing off the main striker.

To sum up, rather 20 million now than 10 in a year

Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady's short spell at Spartak Moscow looks set to be over with the Republic of Ireland international being lined up for a shock move to Aston Villa as Gerard Houllier's first January signing.

Full story: Sunday Mirror

Why would Houllier & O'Neill be interested in exactly the same players? Mcgready, Keane, bentley? It does not make sense..

The only link is that all these players will be readily available in Jan

Our Chairman says we aren't a selling club be great to hear what he says if we do sell Young after Barry and Milner.

I don't think you've quite grasped why he might be leaving Man City.

It certainly isn't because he's pining for Birmingham.

Regarding AYoung, from a football point of view, i would'nt sell him.

From a business point of view, you have a player who will not sign a contract, has 18 months left on his contract, and is worth £20m+, what will he be worth in 6 months time?

According to MMon Villa Talk, 6 are coming in and 8 out, so should be very interesting.

i'd be worried if that was the case. We need a few more in, not two more out

Sidwell, Davies, Ireland(unlikely) we could lose without too much worry but another 5?

If that is true (which is by no means a given), then I expect it will mean over the next twelve months. No way we'll be doing that much in January.

If you then incorporate next summer as well, it would hardly be a big surprise to see any of Friedel, Beye, Warnock, Reo-Coker, Carew Salifou and Osbourne added to your three.

If you then add a striker, goalkeeper, central midfielder, left-back, utility defender and attacking midfielder to the remaining squad I think we'd be looking quite happy. Assuming the above six were of decent quality.

Friedel, Beye, Warnock, Dunne, Davies, Sidwell, Ireland and Carew.

Would be my guess. I doubt Osbourne and Salifou would register to be counted as actual departures.

yep, i presumed he meant January. This summer i'd expect more changes than that possibly. Petrov is entering veteran stage, Heskey etc.,. With the kids and hopefully Young, Gabby, Cuellar etc., GH has the chance to totally rebuild the team

There is very little chance of us signing McGeady. He seems to have settled well in Russia by what I have heard so I don't think he will be leaving early on a fee that is not absurd.

I'm trying to fathom who the eight might be. I reckon we might see the end of Carew, Davies and Sidwell. Outside bets may well be Dunne, Warnock, Ireland, Friedel but who else?

I don't actually see Ashley Young moving in January. Possibly summer.

Sell Ash for 20 mill all day, spend that 20 mill on a proven striker.

Unless he signs a new contract, but we can't let this January window pass without him signing or selling him.

We've never spent £20m on a single player and I don't think we're about to start that's without taking into account what it would do to our wage structure.

If we keep selling our best players and if fans keep encouraging the board to do it then we'll be forever playing second fiddle.

Amen to that.  People advocating selling our best players is just bizarre.

The problem's been the wages they're on even before MON left. Some of the deadwood is unmoveable because of what they're on. Hopefully the likes of Davies seeing out his contract will give GH more scope for manourvering

These stories are easy fodder to fill the pages and tend to be best ignored.
