we had seen the best he had! he went off to score one in 3 and retire virtually 18 months later! i dont remember him not giving effort and i dont remember him deeming himself more important than the club, if you do then thats up to you, if you view his move as a treacherous act then fair bleeding play to you!
He always talks about villa as his club and enthuses totally about us when he is on telly, and i dont ever see him in the bracket as hodge, bosnich et al!

McInally retired because of injury, not because of form.

The point I'm trying to make is that McInally is lauded as a hero, and Platt accused of being a judas; yet they both did the same thing - move abroad when an offer came in.  Platt was a hero on the field - bigger than McInally I'd say, and ultimately Platt's move bought us a brand new team.  McInally's move might have cost us the title in 89/90.  Certainly, we wouldn't have bought Cascarino had we had him.

Just because Platt doesn't kiss our arses on telly; doesn't mean he's a judas.

I don't understand why Platt and Southgate are being mentioned on this thread. Platt carried the team for a couple of years and was sold to fund BFR's squad and Southgate, even after admitting he wanted to leave never gave less than 100% for the following year. Although it was stranger he left us because he wanted to "win things" and pitched up at 'Boro.

And...you'd said that we'd seen the best he had.  We hadn't.  He was still at his peak when we sold him, and did a decent job for Bayern Munich.

I'm still not sure whether McInally was a quality player unlucky with injuries or just a journeymen who got lucky for half a season.

Maybe not a judas, but Paul Mortimer could certainly fall under the 'prick' catagory.

His half-brother Dennis also did his best to upset the board in the immediate pre-Lerner years - he was right most the time, but
antagonistic sometimes.

I am willing to help Curtis Davies achieve this status.

I dunno, I'd err on the side of saying that the fella was a genuine talent, I feel that I saw enough in the first season back in 1988 to feel he was genuine talent, then again not having him as the powerhouse target seemed to free us up to play the expansive football style which was such a joy to watch the season after Mac left.

Would it be fair to say that Mac leaving freed us up to take advantage of the creative movement that Cowans and Platt demonstrated in 89?

When Sid went to Bari that was ok then? Still at least he's back where he belongs (again) in the end.

Loyalty and football...when it comes to players never (or rarely) the twain shall meet.

Where he actually won something.

Correct, but I don't think he was actually expecting to win anything when none of the big clubs came in for him and he had not much other choice other than go to Boro.

Why is Milner a judas? The only time we heard about him wanting to leave was when MON said he did. MIlner immediately denied the comments. Andy Grays a wanker but does make me laugh that we won the european cup just a few years later, maybe he's just bitter?

Milner NEVER denied anything of the sort.

His first season was in division two, when he spent most of his time either injured or falling over. Then we had the August-Christmas of 1988, when he was great, and the rest of that season, when he wasn't.
