Rest assured, the board will do everything in it's power to keep Ashley happy.

Like they have with Milner ?

How on earth can we compete with Man City and probable wages of £120,000+pw?
If Man City come in for any player, then it's goodnight Vienna.

Young to Tottenham would be the worst transfer in the history of transfers.

No that was Heskey from Wigan to Villa.

What is the point in going to Spurs to play (in all likelihood) one season of Champions League?

I didn't see any news today but just checked the bbc website and they say Ashley is likely to stay at villa.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/8909410.stm

On a grammatical note, can you be poised to stay somewhere?

I wouldn't read too much into these talks, surely meeting a player to discuss a new deal when he has two years on his contract, and is at Ashley's age, is RIGHT thing for a club to do?  Surely you don't want a valuable player moving into the territory of having one year left...

Interest from other clubs is speculation, but I don't doubt the club are talking new contracts.

Surely you know the answer to that, everyone knows you need to put in a lot of prep work to do nothing 'properly'.

The Guardian suggests that the Young is 'receptive' to Villa's proposal of a wage rise and extended contract and 'ready to commit his future to the club'.

Somewhat oddly, the article suggests that 'Curtis Davies could follow suit despite being told a couple of months ago that he was surplus to requirements'.

Aston Villa  are determined to keep Ashley Young and will offer the England international an extended contract on improved terms to deter interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Everton. The news will come as a huge relief to Villa supporters following a turbulent week which has seen Martin O'Neill resign as manager and James Milner edge closer to completing his protracted transfer to Manchester City.

Villa have no intention of allowing Young to become the third key figure to depart this summer and plan to put a formal offer in front of the 25-year-old, who has less than two years remaining on his deal, before the end of the month. No figures have been discussed and the club have made it clear there are financial parameters to work within, but Villa have indicated they are prepared to offer their highest-paid player an increase on his £65,000 per week salary, probably over an extended four-year period.

Tottenham and Everton – whose interest in Young will come as a surprise to many given the club's financial constraints – had hoped to capitalise on the uncertainty at Villa in the wake of O'Neill's surprise resignation on Monday, but it now looks highly unlikely that the Midlands club will be persuaded to sell one of their most influential players. Randy Lerner, the Villa chairman, is desperate to keep Young at the club and his resolve has been strengthened by the chaotic events this week.

The search for a new manager continues and Young is watching developments with interest, although any concerns he had about the club significantly scaling back their ambitions have been allayed following the meeting today between his representative and Paul Faulkner, Villa's chief executive. Further discussions are expected to take place within the next couple of weeks but the signs are that Young is receptive to Villa's proposal and ready to commit his future to the club.

Curtis Davies could follow suit despite being told a couple of months ago that he was surplus to requirements. Davies, who is expected to start alongside Richard Dunne in central defence against West Ham United on Saturday, was marginalised under O'Neill and rarely featured last season but since the Northern Irishman's departure he has been assured that he is part of the club's long-term plans. Villa are expected to open contract talks with the central defender in the near future.

I don't think we have any choice if he plays on Saturday.

I get the impression that most of the players are happy that Martins gone and forget about Ashley Young going, Milner was a good deal for Villa selling Ash would be commercial suicide.

Small update, from the BBC's Gossip page:
0923 BST: Winger Ashley Young, who is being linking to Tottenham, will wait to discover the identity of Aston Villa's new manager before deciding on his long-term future. (Press Association)

Not quite as positive as noises coming out yesterday.

I don't think we have any choice if he plays on Saturday.

Why not, because of that contract clause related to the number of games he plays for us? Isn't that a financial bonus? Surely nothing can compel us to enter into negotiations to extend his contract?

I find it odd that a player who only played two games last season is having his contract extended before stringing together some decent performances.
