I'd rather have Barry Fry as DOF with Paul Tait as his coach than have O'Neill back.

So would Luke Young.

OK we've finished 6th for the last three years. if we finish lower let agree that I'm right and if we finish higher I agree that you're right.

I don't think it is as simple as that even that idiot O'Leary managed a top six finish and he spent nowhere the amount MON did.

I won't even say that's simplistic. There isn't a word for what that argument is.

Trying to base the relative success of a manager on the objective rather than the subjective doesn't meet your approval?

Yes let's be objective and support the idea of a team that collapses every March.  Let's support the idea of a team that gets knackered after 70 minutes of kick and rush football.

I would honestly rather see a team that finishes a few places lower but plays decent football than a few more years of that.  There.  I've said it.

It doesn't matter if you think MON is the best man for the job - he bailed on us at the worst time possible, and that is why we're in the situation we are now, with all the accompanying problems (lack of available candidates, managers unwilling to leave clubs three weeks into the season etc etc).

I keep saying this, but to listen to some people on here, you'd think we'd sacked O'Neill, not that he was the one who bailed on us.

To assume that our club's success is totally independent of the success of other, wealthier clubs is incredibly simplistic.

For me the best available manager nobody has yet mentioned is Martin O'Neill. There I've said it.

In football the saying is: `never go back'.

But I say: `never come back, four eyes.'

There I've said it.

Taking into account the loss of our best player and the close-season strengthening of our rivals I doubt even Martin would have matched last years finish so its probably not a fair benchmark.

I think Houllier will do a good job, and was an inspired choice by our board in the circumstances.

I was a staunch defender of MoN, even if I was not very excited by his appointment, and I think he did a good job, by and large.

There, I've said it.

I was worrying during the summer that Bob Bradley would come in, so I can't be unhappy with Houllier.

We won't forget that Martin let an 8 point gap to Arsenel slip, it's not even like we had Europe to distract us, because he gave that up, he then lost an even bigger lead over Everton slip to finish 6th.

So to finish 6th from such a strong position is closer to failure than success, especially as there was no rich man city or Harry inspired spurs competing.

If we got 6th again that would eclipse anything Martin did due to the current competiveness

Let's see what some Liverpool fans think...

Link

I feel quite a bit more confident after reading that.  I'd say that 75% of them are pro "Ged" (as they call him).  The main thing they seem to give him credit for is "dragging the club into the 21st century".  Any idea what century villa are operating in.  With the new Bodymore Heath I'd imagine we're already there, yet I would not have MON down as a pioneering manager in this regard.
