We're not in some crisis or total turmoil, we've lost a manager who had lost his hunger for the job.

The squad is hardly choca block with players, so if we get rid of Beye and Davies and replace them with cheap French versions everything in the garden will be rosy will it ?

There are few in the running that are better qualified and managers by and large appears to get better as they get older these days. He said his signings were not great towards the end of the Liverpool job, so happy to give him a shot. He is a big, big name in world football, players will want to play for him and in the circumstances it is a very different, interesting appointment.

Considering some of the names mentioned it could be a hell of a lot worse. I dont think his teams have played football as turgid as MON had us playing the last few seasons. It was so uninspiring watching us under him. Give him a go I say. Whats the worst that could happen , he could sign Heskey again.....ah bollo***

The difficulty in judging the boards decision (assuming confirmation next week) here, is simply that we are not in possession of all the facts.

In other words, we don't know for sure who wasn't interested in the job or whether Lerner/Faulkner were refused permission to speak to a particular candidate by their employers.

If the choice was Hiddink, Moyes, Hitzfeld and Houllier they've fucked up.

If the final pool was narrowed down to Curbishley, Klinsmann, Koeman and Houllier then I wouldn't argue with their pick.

Hardly inspiring but a safe pair of hands.

If you don't mind me saying I think Houllier would be an excellent appointment. Vastly underrated manager, tactically spot on and builds good relationships with the players. If it wasn't for his heart problems he would have won the title with us and he'll give you a much better shot at breaking into the top 4 than O'Neil.

Thanks Reina. Interesting to hear it from a Liverpool perspective. There seems to be concerns on the site about some of his transfers (altho he also seems to be credited with building your Champions League winning team under Benitez).  What's your view on that?

It's mainly based on his last couple of seasons when he went a bit loopy after his health issues. He really should have had 6 months off and then come back but he lost control and bought some expensive shockers like Diouf, Diao and Cisse. Before that he had his failures like any other manager but he'd built a strong foundation with shrewd sigingings like Babbel, Henchoz, Mcallister and Hyppia (who is undoubtedly one of the best signings the clubs has ever made taking into account fee and service) as well as making full use of the talent already available to him. Heskey turned into a big pudding but in the treble season he was unstoppable.

Maybe I'm being sentimental as I'll always respect him for what he did for us in the first part of his reign, but I just don't think you can argue with his record. He'll also command the respect of the players (well most of them) and will be able to attract better talent from abroad. In terms of the style of football, you will be organised but a lot more flexible than you were under MON, who I felt was a bit one dimensional.

Thanks Reina really appreciate your feedback - I'm putting you forward as the best un-official Heroes & Villains Counsellor 2010!! God knows we need regular counselling on here (also swap counselling with therapy)

Talksport:-

TalkSPORT understands Gerard Houllier has held discussions with Aston Villa regarding their managerial vacancy.

Villa chairman Randy Lerner wants an experienced boss to take over following Martin O’Neill’s resignation last month and Mark Hughes, Alan Curbishley and David Moyes have all been linked with the job permanently.

French football correspondent Phillippe Auclair confirmed the current situation on Football First saying: “I spoke to Gerard this afternoon and on the record he confirmed that there had been contact with Aston Villa and himself at the club’s behest and that yes, they were interested in hiring him as a manager

“It seems that it’s not a done deal there are other candidates for the job and I don’t think there will be a decision taken in the next 24 to 48 hours as we thought originally. It’s going to take a little bit longer than that so we might have to wait until Thursday or Friday before we know who is the new Aston Villa manager.

Auclair added: “This offer comes at a time when he has had enough of the criticism he has been taking in France for his role or non-role in the debacle of the World Cup and he is basically looking to get away from this.”

“He loves English football he genuinely has a passion for English football it’s the football he feels closest to. He feels that he really belongs here and this is his proper football home rather than France.

Nothing much really I think there is going to be more discussion but I don’t think anything is going to happen before the middle of the week at the earliest.

Since O’Neill’s departure reserve-team manager Kevin MacDonald has been temporarily at the helm leading the team to two wins in three Premier League games.

I think the powers that be have let the Curbishley and KMac names slip and now Houllier has come to the fore we think its better.

For me the best available manager nobody has yet mentioned is Martin O'Neill. There I've said it.

I won't even say that's simplistic. There isn't a word for what that argument is.
