Curbs should take the Southampton job - he could do another Charlton with them, similar size club, lower ambitions, they'd love him. Perfect for him I reckon.

Puppyfeat , who says milner and young came to villa because of mon- milner knew the club and saw it as a step up and ash looked at it in the same way,as a good career move. we are a huge club and can attract decent players without mon!

Agree that Southampton would be the ideal long term project for curbs and he would probably do a charlton with them.

HOw many of us doubted ashley & milner when they came ? They came with big price tag but they were not big players everyone looking for - be honest.
I love both of them to be frank. We definitely missed Milner in Newcastle defeat.

MOst of big players that come to villa were shitty !
They came to enjoy their retirements.

Prefer to get young, good attitude, willing to improve compare to all those primadonas.
Me too - I include the likes of Ash and Milner as big players, even though they were young when we got em. They came to Villa because they wanted to work with and learn from MON. Do ya reckon Curbs would attract the likes of them?

What has MON achieved actually ?
runner up in uefa ? hey, roy did a better job with much more limited fun with fulham !
Oh, MON did win title in scotlands, so did strachan

He won two cups with Leicester.

And we were comparing MON and Curbishley, not MON and Hodgson.

Had no doubts about milner because I saw him here before and knew he would be a good signing, at the time I did feel we may have paid over the odds for ash though.

Er, I do! We are a big club for sure, but if we make a bad appointment now we won't seem so attractive soon, especially if we're not going to be paying mega wages in the future. So we need someone with a bit of charisma who can attract the sort of players to keep us going in the right direction. And as the consensus here rightly is that someone like Curbs ain't that man.

MON leaving us has given the Club an ideal opportunity to kick on to the next level even with the current squad.

Absolutely. Well said.

Hopefully the board are seeing this as an opportunity and not a burden.

I am sure they are.

2 cups - where no top teams interested to compete last time round ? (checked those 2 years)
MON did a fantastic job definitely with leicester, so did Curbs with charlton.
So did roy who came from smaller club than villas.
And definitely, so did strachan !

I'm confused at what the argument is now.

O'Neill is a better manager than Curbishley, by some distance. We should be looking at much, much better.

Playing devils advocate –

I wouldn’t be against Sven but people listing his achievements really doesn’t mean a great deal as the most noticeable ones were achieved when Jack the Ripper was a lad, football has moved on since then. Could he do it now on possibly a limited budget that remains to be seen. He’s certainly got the contacts to find a hidden gem that’s for sure.

Winning the Italian league and other trophies between 1998 and 2000 or so isn't that long ago - in fact around the same time or a little after Martin O'Neill's most successful (in terms of trophies anyway) stint as a  manager in the PL with Leicester.

I was referring to his earlier managerial stints in Sweden and at Benfica where presumably he worked under stricter financial constraints than he did at Lazio where Gragnotti(sp) bankrolled a heavy spending spree comparable to that of Man City on the likes of Crespo, Veron, Nedved and Vieri. If he got a similar sum at Villa I’m sure he could do well, who wouldn’t? But in these times of financial belt tightening he will have to watch the pennies a bit more.

Anyway as you were.

Right - Looks like Eck and the board are falling out over at the Sty.  I'd take him.  Any thoughts?

Imagine if we got Big Eck and the Blouse signed MON, now that would be interesting.

If we appoint Sven I think we will see players from Mexico / Ivory Coast coming to B6 6HE.

I don't think he will be bad appointment but he should work with our coaching set up and add new staff.  If Randy want opinons about Sven, he should ask Richard and Stephen.

more boring functional football, pack the midfield with a load of defensive midfielders, playing one man up front, sending the team out not to lose rather than play to win.
no thanks
