If Sven took the position and started well, and another bigger team came in for him, he would fuck right off before the ink was dry.  Thats my impression.  I want someone that cares about my team, thats in it for the long haul, is hard and fair, and understands the value of money.  I want him to want to come to Villa, because he believes that my team should be challenging for honours, and he has a Plan (and a Plan B) on how he is going to achieve it.

McLeish hasn't been mentioned for a couple of pages so I'm returning his hat into the ring with this 'story'

Chelts, I didnt say that, and certainly did not mean to insinuate that!  I was just a bit alarmed about the love in for Sven

Do we need , or want, someone who is going to devote their services till their death bed?

Many feel that after three years MON had done all that he was going to here, Benitez won the CL and FA Cup in his first two years, then nothing for four at Liverpool. Your wish list seems to require a composite of Mother Theresa, and Carl Chinn, neither of whom are available.

Ireland and dunne were good under Sven as was ulrika by all accounts.I think he would be great for us and if beckham came on loan later on then think of the money the club would make in shirt sales and merchandise.

Surely of the names mentioned he has to be the man.

This is depressing - remember the heady days when replacing O Neill would have us picking from a crop of world class managers?

ALAN CURBISHLEY was never mentioned. Not even in jest.

Obviously a no-no for us.But both parties there should be careful about what they wish for.

A shrewd point, and one in Svens favour.

Why do you keep banging on about Beckham? There's absolutely nothing to suggest that he'd come just because we have a has been Swede in charge. And even if he was interested we couldn't afford his wages and he's past it anyway.

Reality can I introduce you to east19?

Sven has a very good CV

IFK Göteborg
Svenska Cupen Winners 1979, 1982
Allsvenskan Champions 1982
UEFA Cup Winners 1982

S.L. Benfica
Portuguese Liga Champions 1983, 1984, 1991
Cup of Portugal Winners 1983
SuperCup Cândido de Oliveira Champions 1989
UEFA Champions League Runners Up 1990
UEFA Cup Runners Up 1983

A.S. Roma
Coppa Italia Winners 1986

U.C. Sampdoria
Coppa Italia Winners 1994

S.S. Lazio
Coppa Italia Winners 1998, 2000
Italian Super Cup Winners 1998
Supercoppa Italiana1998, 2000
UEFA Cup Winners Cup Winners 1999
UEFA Super Cup Winners 1999
Serie A Champions 2000
UEFA Cup Runners Up 1998

There then of course, comes the "wilderness years" of England etc. Most important is his contacts to get a stronger squad back at Villa.

Now, the above, or the likes of Curbishley and Southgate?

Of course, there is also better than Sven out there. And not Mark Hughes, who has done f-all.

Sorry, I just reread my posts, and my requests were a bit too twee.  I just want a good manager in.  Im trying to convince myself that should Curbs get in, I could cheer him.  But I would feel disappointed intially that we couldnt get anyone better.  There were some good posts about how long the honeymoon lasted with MON which were relevant.   A Curbishly like appointment would get a much tougher reception, and have to work miracles to keep the fans on side, something the interviewers would recognise.

Why would Sven be a good candidate? Other than him being neither KMac or Curbishley? He needs to have money to do anything anywhere - see Lazio, Man City, Notts County and without it he isn't good enough. He made his name in Sweden at Gothenburg granted but since then its been money all the way that has built his reputation. Failed with England, failed badly with Mexico, and the same with the Ivory Coast. he will need to work within budgetry restrictions at Villa. Definitely not the man for us. He will bring Beckham with him though, by all accounts.

He will not bring Beckham - He can only play for a team where the main kit sponsor is Adidas
And to be honest why the fuck would we want an aging, one trick pony, underpant salesman in our team

I was only making a Fake Sheikh quip.

Chris, I agree on the past it front. Unfortunately for Beckham, I really think the injury he received a few months back will prove too much to recover him. Sure, he might come back to play but I suspect he'll struggle and retirement will be pretty soon afterwards.
