All hail Diego Armando Maradona. The best player to have ever played, to have scored the greatest goal of all time inspired by God. It would be awesome if he was our manager... would raise the club profile massively, aslong as he plays more than 1 midfielder and doesn't relegate us.

And think of all the players that would flock to the Villa with him in charge...Messi, Tevez, Batistuta, Di Stefano, Kempes...

And, naturally, Ricky Villa.

He managed Argentina better than Capello managed England at the World Cup. Won all 3 group games and got to the quarter-finals.

Get Capello and Maradona to swap squads and see how they do.

Anyone else feel that its not quite so urgent to get someone in quickly ?
I think the team is in good hands for the short term with KM and his support staff.
Personally, I think we need someone with far more experience to take the full time job, but for now I'm happy for Randy to take his time and get the right man.
There is no pressure to get this done quickly.

Here are Sven's comments on the job - methinks he really wants it:

from Sporting Life

Quote

Sven-Goran Eriksson says he has received no contact from Aston Villa about their vacant manager's job.

The former England boss is without a job after leaving the Ivory Coast following the World Cup this summer, and is among the favourites to be offered the role at Villa Park following Martin O'Neill's departure.

Eriksson was linked with the position in 2006 after leaving England before O'Neill was appointed, and made no secret of his desire to make a return to management.

However he claimed he had heard nothing from the Midlands club, who may turn to caretaker Kevin MacDonald after an emphatic 3-0 victory over West Ham in their opening game of the season.

"I have had no contact with them," said Eriksson.

"I want to get back into football. It's a big club, everybody knows that, but I've had no contact. We'll see what happens.

"There are so many available managers around Europe and around the world, I'm not the only one (not contacted). And they did very well yesterday so they might not do anything."

The encouraging thing is that he's had no contact. Long may that continue

I think you must be on the same stuff that Diego is!

EDIT:  reading it again, you weren't being serious, were you?

Sven seems to genuinely like the club. Wasn't his first England match at Villa Park and I think his Lazio side played in the cup winners cup final at VP in 1999? He would have become more familiar with the club as England manager.

He was interested in 2006 and now he's interested again. Maybe appointing somebody who has an interest in the club going back a few years would be a good thing? Saying that I would rather Jol but Sven is beginning to creep up my pecking order!

Sven ticks all the boxes for me.  Yes, we'd get more media attention than other candidates but that's not always a bad thing if you manage the hype - it sells tickets, creates interest and hopefully attracts players to want to play for the Villa.  Just look at the anti-climax we fealt when Dr Jo's appoitment was announced.

Sven's record is good (didn't Man Citeh players threaten to strike when he was booted there) and I think he's have us playing the way we want to see the Villa play.

If only I was more convinced about Director of Football roles, a Sven/Kevin Mac team might work well playing to their strengths.

Doesn't he play a rigid 4-4-2 of the type we've only just stopped playing?

As an experienced Manager, I'm sure he'd play the formation that suits the players he inherites and the opposition and circumstances- be that 4-4-2 / 4-3-3 / 4-5-1.  In short, the variety that we've been lacking.

The biggest point is i'm fairly positive it wouldn't include the HOOF that we'd become so dependent on under latter day MON.

A Sven Goran Eriksson circus? No thanks.

Anyway, he'd want too much money and spunk all transfer money on expensive has beens.

We saw the future on Saturday.

The thing about these director of football roles not working in England is that the DOF they use tends to be an older manager, so will naturally work to undermine a manager without even trying.  Spurs had some luck with it, but this was because they used Arnesen, who isn't and never will be a manager.  Also, the managers we have aren't used to dual set up, both as a player and in their management career, so are sceptical of it.

Were we to try it, it could only work with an overseas manager and DOF.
