As a boy, I rated Townsend and Macca equally. They were my heroes and I was gutted when Townsend left us. Obviously with age I realise McGrath was world class while Townsend was a good PL standard midfielder.

As an aside I see Staunton is in the sky studio for the Ireland game tonight!

Merson was right. There were some terrible Villa signings in that 2001-2003 era.

Merson was right. There were some terrible Villa signings in that 2001-2003 era.
