He's another who history has served well - a one-trick pony of limited ability.

I would have thought he would hold hero status for you for a certain goal scored against a certain local neighbour.

We offered him a contract after leaving him out of the team for weeks on end, for no apparent reason. Had we offered him when  he was a first-team regular he would've signed quicker than you can say "Gesundheit!".
I'm certainly not claiming that O'Leary was a tactical master or that we treated him particularly well.

But regardless of all that, we still didn't "let him go". He chose to sign for another club.

Well, true. But we certainly could've done more to keep him. Anyway, come on Burnley. Fancy Upton Park as the only league away ground left this season that I haven't "got" but if they get to the FA Cup Semis it will be moved to a midweek... balls to the East End on a Tuesday night.

I won't mind if we get to the FA Cup Semis as I will go to that.

Again, it's all fairly hypothetical.

He left claiming that he wanted to be in Germany in the season before the World Cup so that he was chosen for the squad. He won the title and had the catalyst for a very decent career in the German team.

Whatever his reasons were, his decision was more than vindicated.

Not bringing him back in the summer was more of a mistake in my opinion. Particularly when Ireland was the alternative.

He's got a class shot on him, but he isn't class, he's average apart from that.

Now stop salivating over Hitz's goal. Once in a blue moon strike. He was not that good and didn't exactly set germany on fire when he moved. Limited player.

Sorry but you do not get 52 caps for the German national side by being "average"
He was a class act that we let slip

When exactly was he class for us? Three managers didn't seem to think so.

2-0. Another ex Villa, Can't Control. Lets hear you all wax lyrical about him now, how he was brilliant for us and we shouldn't have let him go...

he got those caps in a historically mediocre German national team.

In terms of as a player for us I would agree. However, he was young then and has improved a great deal since.

3-0, Can't Control again. He's brilliant, we shouldn't have let him go.

He signed for Stuttgart and they won their first title in 15 years with Hitz scoring the winner in the game that won it for them. Which cemented his place in the Germany squad.

I'd say he had a decent enough impact.
