We should never have let him go.

Goal for Tommy Hitz on his West Ham debut, trademark 25-yarder on his left foot. Good luck to him... always liked him as a player, one of my favourites in the DOL dog days. Wouldn't have him back now though, that's a ship that has well and truly sailed.

If he wasn't scoring a screamer though what did he actually do? He's slow, can't pass, can't tackle and if he didn't score a belter then you wouldn't have known he was playing most of the time.

So what did we do when he left?

We allowed him to get in a position where his contract expired. He would have loved to have stayed, his missus at the time loved living in Birmingham, we didn't bother till it was too late. Bizarrely, once it was clear he was leaving, O'Leary started picking him every game.

We really should have picked him up in the summer.

What, with Salifou in the squad?

We offered him a new contract, he declined to sign it in order to sign for Stuttgart. Short of manacling him to the Holte Gates there's not a lot more we could have done.

We certainly didn't 'let him go'.

He's another who history has served well - a one-trick pony of limited ability.

We offered him a contract after leaving him out of the team for weeks on end, for no apparent reason. Had we offered him when  he was a first-team regular he would've signed quicker than you can say "Gesundheit!".

Someone clearly hasn't seen him play since 2005.

23 year old midfielders are capable of getting better you know.

I don't think he's a World beater but he was a lot better than some of the dross we had when he left.

He was/is a two trick pony. A left-foot hammer and tackling that Norman Hunter would be proud of. He seemed to me to go out of his way to give the opposition's star player an early kick

I'm certainly not claiming that O'Leary was a tactical master or that we treated him particularly well.

But regardless of all that, we still didn't "let him go". He chose to sign for another club.
