Ashley Young was the best left-sided winger in 07/08 and 08/09 getting into the Premier League team of the year and winning Young Player of the Year. Bale hasn't achieved what Ash has achieved.

Young at his best > Bale at his best

I think the key word there is highlighted. Bale will easily be in the team of the year if he continues as he has this season. His move forward arguably gave them the fourth place finish especially his goals and performances against Arse and Chelski in successive matches. He was only kept out of it this year as the shortlist is selected in January. They have Milner in as LW for 09-10 even though his best performances were in the centre.

I don't buy that at all.

Bale has looked every bit as good as Ashley ever did in the league, and has just scored a hat trick for his team whilst four goals down and playing with ten men away at Inter Milan.

They're both very good players, but currently Bale is showing much, much better form.

Gareth Bale?! Like I said Young has ALREADY proven himself getting awards and showing he was the best LW in the league in two consecutive seasons. This Bale hype is getting out of hand from 'Call Collymore' to internet forums... just listen to spurs fans saying he is worth more money than Rooney, he is world class etc... he's been playing LW for just 6 months. Ash was just as good if not better than Bale in the whole of 07/08 and most of 08/09 yet he wasn't getting the massive wankfest like Bale is getting. Once Bale's form drops no-one will talk about him.

Ashley Young isn't world class, neither is Bale... but the point i'm making is that Ash has proven it 2 seasons in a row, you can't expect him to produce amazing performances all the time; if he did he wouldn't be playing for us, he'd be playing for the best teams in the world. Just because Rooney was shit at the World Cup and has done virtually nothing for United this season you don't just de-value him for that etc...

Besides, we all know how much hype the media dish out to spurs... what if Bale played for us and Ash played for Spurs?

The thing is, the two seasons in a row you mentioned were the season before last and the one before that.

I don't expect him to provide amazing performances all the time, either, i just think that - on current form - Bale is doing much more than Ashley, and I don't think you'd find many neutrals who would disagree.

Bale will probably be the target of some of the biggest clubs in Europe in coming transfer windows. Ashley might be the target of Spurs.

Yes, and in 6 months he has had a massive hand in getting his team fourth and has just scored a very good hat trick against the European champions. He can also score or setup goals from set pieces whilst Ash has been struggling to get the ball in the box properly for the last 18 months.  I'm not going with the hype. I'm going on what I have seen in matches.

At the moment he is the equal of Ash ever was and he could well improve further.

I agree paulie, Bale is performing really well at the moment... but I also think Ash has done pretty well this season too and is performing better than last season which is positive. If Bale can keep this up for another season, he's fair game and gets the respect he deserves, just not after 6 months i'm afraid. So many players in the past have been hyped up after a short burst of great form, but then have faded into insignificance... lets see what Bale can do over the long-term.

Even when Spuds were 4-0 down, it was still them bastards that were playing Inter in the Champions League and not us. Take the piss all you want, that fucking should have been us.

Sad, but true.

It's fun to point and laugh at them, but tonight I spent the evening watching the Apprentice and playing computer games.

My Spurs supporting friend watched his team play Inter at the San Siro in the Champions League.

Last night was the first time Spurs and Inter had ever met in competitive football. We've already played them and beaten them.

Unfortunately Randy hasn't been able to spend as much on our squad as Spurs have on theirs. It's an unavoidable fact of modern football that you get what you pay for and their squad cost about twice as much as ours.

I thought somebody had been through this myth and proved that "net spend" since Randy took over, we've spent more than Spurs?

Please, lets not do the Spurs v Villa spend argument AGAIN!

They are a good side and just caught Inter in top form for that first half an hour.  I think even Chelsea might have struggled to live with them - Sneijder was imense!

Bale will get a lot of plaudits, but his goals game when the game was won and Inter took their foot off.  It's a bit easier to play then!

It's not a myth when you look at squad value, Redknapp has a larger and more expensive squad of players to choose from than Houllier has. Net spend is useful for accountants, the players that he has on the pitch are more important for a manager.

We blew fourth place twice in seasons when Spurs were absolutely nowhere.

I'm not going to take the piss out of a team playing in a competition we have never qualified for since it became the route to massive riches.

True, but it's not of much relevance to 2010, sadly.
