I think Giles will be axed at the end of the season.

We have really missed Trott this year and in Westwood we have a captain who does not merit a place in the side so the batting line up is severely restricted.

You would hope that the siege mentality would kick in and that the victory against Essex in the last 4 day game would spur them on. Clearly not the case.

That said it is tight at the foot of the table with 20 points seperating 5 teams. A couple of wins would make all the difference but it's difficult to see where the next win is coming from.

How we could have done with Trott and Bell yesterday

We still have Troughton, Ambrose and Clarke, who haven't performed anything like their ability with the bat this year.  I look at our batting line up and considering the bowlers have done ok, there is no way we should be in the state we are.

Some stats lifted from the Bears supporters forum:

4 of yesterdays top 7 have NEVER scored 1,000 runs in a season;

A fifth has managed it just once in a 9 year career (for Surrey);

A sixth managed it in his debut season in 2002 but never since;

A seventh hasn't managed it for 7 years.

A thumping win against Surrey. Very satisfying. Did Davies and Batty think they were moving to a bigger county to win things? A parallel with Barry and Milner, perhaps?

We're out of the relegation zone - next week's match against Kent is the proverbial 48-pointer!

Excellent win today to keep the hopes alive. If Tim Ambrose is leaving the club then Luke Sutton, who has just announced he's moving on from Lancs, would be a good shout. As would Ryan Sidebottom, who is leaving Notts, although to be fair our bowling has been excellent throughout the season.  It's the batting where massive work needs to be done.

Turned out to be a decent day for the Bears.

Won the toss, collapsed to 107 for 7 before the last three wickets added 187, including a stand of 118 for the last wicket.

And then we reduced Kent to 37 for 3 by the close, including Denly and Key for blobs.  Good work.
