He has the will and the desire but not the talent, if we are to improve we must get better players.

As much as I agree with this, football is a team game, and a player who is average in one team might become crucial in another. If NRC were playing for Blackburn, say, he'd probably be their up-and-down, box-to-box player, and be reasonably rubbish as a result. For us, however, if he can tackle and intercept with reasonable tactical discipline and pass it five yards to Petrov, Ireland, Downing or Young, then job done.

I agree, we need a far more rounded player in the longer term, as NRC's deficiencies are pretty out there for all to see, but in the short term we have no other option - and we could do worse.

Great. Ian Dowie to be manager. What was the slogan..."Proud history, Bright future" or something?

We should go for Rodwell or Fellaini from Everton
or Muamba from Bolton
or moussa sissoko (french)

a big defensive midfielder who will make NRC redundant/squad/sub is my wish
ireland should make petrov redundant/squad/sub

Not such a fan of Muamba, think he might turn out a bit like NRC. We don't really have a chance of getting Fellaini or Rodwell, but Moussa Sissoko is a decent shout - though he is highly-rated, at the moment we could be the best option for him. Not totally convinced about his mental strength though - still, very good player.

I don't think Ireland will replace Petrov, I still think that's Delph's role down the line.

NRC has actually done very little wrong since signing for Villa.  Whenever the guy plays he gives 100%, and on his best day can add extra edge to the midfeld, and is able to drive the team forward and take hold of the match in the middle.  Liverpool away last season was a prime example of this, it was between him and Friedel for my MOM that night.  Its just a shame the way Petrov has come on the last couple of years and really made that role his own.  However as a squad player who maybe can feature more in the cups I still think Reo-Coker is a vaild member.

Bothroyd no thanks!  Yes we must focus on youth, but we aleady have enough good young players at the club to be making an impact.  If we are going to make just one more signing this summer, it needs to be an experinced centre forward who can make that little bit of difference to our attacking play.

*Lazio and Fiorentina are both vying for Mahamadou Diarra. His contract is (mercifully) up at the end of the year and Madrid will accept anything in the neighborhood of 5m euro for the man who cost nearly 30m euro 4 years ago.

*Supposedly Mourinho wants to keep Lass Diarra but there is a new rumour today that O. Lyon are ready to make an offer. It is thought that Lass is not happy with being a back up to Alonso, Khedira, and Gago. Big trouble is his wages...

Spurs are linked with Luis Fabiano and we're after Jay Bothroyd.

I don't believe either to be honest. Certainly not the latter.

We'll take Toulalan of Lyons hands then.

As has been said we need some steel in the middle of the park , someone who isn't afraid to put there foot in and do the dirty work. I think short term our only option is to give NRC a run in the team along side Petrov and push Ireland up behind a lone striker with Ash on one wing and Downing or Albrighton on the other.

If we don't buy any of the above... :-X
NRC has to start and play out of his skin until Delph is fit and can give him some competition

Petrov cannot be relied upon to stop the other sides midfield-he can't really tackle he just tries to jockey to opposing player into passing somewhere else

Hopefully Toulalan isn't a keeper, then.

Diame at Wigan, Alou Diarra at Bordeaux and Jermaine Jones at Schalke are all 6ft+ Defensive mids who could improve us.

Strong, physical players but they can also play a bit.

There is also a young lad at Schalke called Matip. 6ft 3 and plays either defensive mid or at the back. Only broke through last year (he's 19) but made enough of an impact to be called up by Cameroon.

We need some bollocks in midfield - we were completely overrun yesterday and needed someone to stick his foot in and impose himself on the opposition.  I truly believe that in time, Delph will be that man but we cannot afford to wait for him, so we need a shorter term (dare I say cheaper) solution, and O'Hara is that man.  We'd get him for £3M I reckon.

Very good shout Des, been suggesting O'Hara for ages, can't understand why there has been no real interest in him or, indeed, why more clubs were not after Kevin Prince Boateng as I thought he had a very good World Cup

You may have a soft spot for Pompey given your geographical location Richard, but this was the central midfield that got relegated. Boateng has certainly improved since rotting in Spurs reserves but O'Hara is another young over-rated English player imo. Good for blose or a bottom half side but if we get him we may as well have kept Craig Gardner.

I think he's a bit better than that Eammon but who can tell these days! I was rather impressed, if truth be told, with how polite he was and knowledgeable when he was the studio guest for one of Sky's games which, I think, featured Pompey when he was injured. I'm always impressed by anyone who is a bit erudite and has good manners. I was actually born in Portsmouth too as my Dad was doing his National Service down from Brum in the RAF on Thorney Island when I came along...
