I think though with the squad we have, minus Milner, plus Ireland, that there is more than enough quality for the new man to be able to challenge for the top 6 at least.

Can't see it myself. would be happy with 8th or 9th if we can see things being gradually changed over the season. He's not going to want to play MON's way. no-one does

Hang on Greg, if the squad is nigh on the same as last year, with in theory more options in because there will be a fresh slate for all, then why do expect 8th-9th? If you think the new guy will have us playing better football too, then surely he should be able to at least match O’Neill’s achievements.

Or did O’Neill do better than you expected?

Hey Greg , take it you've sobered up after Mondays champers- who do you want for the managers job?

Dunno really. not really inspiring names linked but they all have the bonus of not being MON :0). I'd like Moyes. failing that a foreign manager with a wide knowledge of the foreign transfer market.

So someone who's already ruled themselves out of the running or a 'foreign manager'. So basically, you're positioning yourself to moan about whoever gets the job.

I think Shearer will get it. Possibly for one season with a view to a longer contract or straight four year contract.

Trust Greg to name those two as opposed to the three or four who may have some use again.

Davies was terrible, he's out of contract in the summer so unless he's playing regularly he'll be off. NRC got a raw deal but again will be off if he doesn't start, likewise Young who i think most people would keep but he doesn't seem to want to stay. Beye, i guess will stay. still 20 odd million in fees paid for there and the possiblity of nothing back if we don't sell and they're not in the managers plans

I think to say Davies was terrible is extremely harsh.  He's young, has been unlucky with injuries and was starting to look very promising at the start of last season.  I agree with you about the others.

MON played a certain way. He was very good at playing that way. Whether that was ever enough to get top4 i doubt it. With the personnel available a new manager will have to compromise but it will be a few seasons at least till he gets his squad together, but just carrying on with MON's tactics and formation isn't an option.  Take a step back to go forward etc...

I think i will give the new manager more time than a lot of the MON brigade will personally, whoever it is.

Never rated him and i didn't enjoy watching us waiting for his customary 1 major fuck-up per game. However clean slate etc., and maybe he couldn't play in a MON formation (he certainly looked like he didn't know where he was supposed to be playing). time will tell i guess

What MON brigade? Isnt it about time you grew up?
It seems to me that the only ones still banging on about MON are those that are obsessed with him. Namely you, Mrs Overall and stevenjos and so on.
I wonder what you'll find to talk about once you realise everybody else has moved on. Which will happen soon enough.

Anyway, you say you'll give the new manger time etc. Sure you will. You complain about pretty much everything.
The new guy, whoever it is, wont be any different.

the likes of chris are still defending MON this very night with various digs aimed at Lerner. You really think if the new guy doesn't do very well then MON won't be brought up at every opportunity by some? A bit naive even for you....

yeah, i guess mentioning the manager who's basically left us in the lurch a week before the season starts is overplaying it a bit.... *double facepalm*

Oh, so you're aware of such thing as overplaying then? That's encouraging.

When Stilyan Petrov made his debut for us v West Ham I seriously though he was going to go on and be world class.

Just been on SSN again, Says Irelands demands could scupper the deal. He's holding out for a £2m pay off! They better get their finger out if they want the fucker to play tomorrow!

I don't blame Ireland. Dunne had one so Im expecting him to have one as well. I don't know why they couldn't have sorted out all the formalities in the week then the medicals could have been done yesterday

Personally, i still believe this Ireland/Milner deal will still get sorted, tho probably not in time for tomorrow.
Even if he is the only player to come in, with our existing squad, plus Albrighton/Fonz probably getting more of a chance, then we still have a team capable of challenging top 6 again.
Some of the negative comments that have been flying around various outlets about us struggling have been crazy.
If anthing, players like Luke Young, NRC will probably get more game time (if they stay) and will be like a new signing as they will have a point to prove. That, coupled with a new manager who hopefully utilise the squad, the players will be fresher in the latter stages of the season.
