I must admit, August arrives on Sunday and no players in. Starting to get a bit twitchy. The sight of Salifou in the squad for the Walsall game this week hasn't helped. Really, what's the point?

Spike with a staunch Villa fan yesterday - season ticket holder of many years, hosted exec boxes many times, friends with some of the old Villa boys.....

Is he renewing ? - No he isn't.

He's picking his games and MAY buy a half ST in Dec / Jan if things stsrt to get better.

It is getting rather stale at VP nowadays sadly.

It's interesting. In fact I've brought the subject up a few times but  will there be a large drop off in attendances from last year because so many people have not renewed (and genuinely I have no idea just how many)? And will the kit being delayed have an drop off in merchandise sales?

And will this have a major impact in our turnover?

I've never known things so bleak for a while at this time of year, I really see nothing changing under o neill either,I expect cuellar at right back, heskey after 70mins and a rigid 442 , very depressing thoughts.

I honestly don't get why it's 'bleak'?

The Milner thing is nothing we haven't experienced many times before with the likes or Yorke and Barry.  I also would have only expected one player in by now, basing things on Martin's previous summer schedule, so not too worried there.

My view is that we're going to have a busy and exciting January, but then that's because I think the players will be coming in.

EDIT - my bad, that was meant to say August.  I think we'll see a busy and exciting August!!

Anyone who thinks Martin - its tough to buy in Jan - O'neill will be busy in January needs to closely study the last 3 seasons. Routledge is about all. Young and Carew were teh exception in season 1, but since then Jan has bought Routledge and Heskey. You are going to struggle to suggest that is form for an exciting month of incomings. Players should be being signed now so they can get pre season under their cap and be ready for the kick off. As it is we are playing our usual summer game of hold on to one player as long as we can while waiting to see if 3-4 cast offs are available late in the summer. 2nd choice Villa. It is bloody bleak at the minute.

It's not quite bleak. That's too strong a word as I've said before it's a bit more of a malaise. It's not like we're certainties to go down or like that it's just for supporters (as I don't think things are such amongst players or management) all we seem to hear is negative. Milner and others are linked with the door, nothing has come in and most links are to players who are from the meh or oh shit categories.

It is more perception than reality too as I agree with you that we will get players in by the end of the window. Some of them might be much better than meh level too! I don't think based on what I've heard that we have no money and that we must sell to buy and I also don't think we've sat on our hands. However, that does not disguise the fact that nopthing has happened and most of the news in papers (true or utter bollocks) has been largely negative. It's all along way from the promise of an era we thought was beckoning a few years back.

What's happening with Keane by the way? Nothing seems to have been said in the papers for a while.

Thing is though there just doesn't seem anything to get excited about, no signings, Milner is leaving, People are linking Ashley Young away. No kit, People are talking about not renewing.

I want to see a great signing, I want to go wow fuck me im getting a season ticket I can't bear to miss this. I want somethin to excite the fans and players alike. I just want my enthusiasm back!!!

I'm fairly optimistic. Out of players we don't want to leave, only Milner is a serious possibility. Ash will stay, Gabby will stay, I have no doubts about these.

Keane is looking quite sharp in pre-season, and if we signed him for a couple of years I'd be quite pleased. Ireland I'd be delighted with, precisely the type of player we've been lacking over the last few years. McGeady, not so much, but you give everyone a chance I suppose, besides which I have my doubts over how valid those links have been. No other really credible links that spring to mind, but that's ok - none of us had any idea about Cuellar or Collins before they were about to happen I seem to remember.

Well, if you want an 'exciting' signing, I don't think it will happen.  I'm not sure our profile is high enough to attract one, but also when was the last one Villa had that actually worked out for us?

What we will see is a selection of good players, some debatably so, who will improve us.  Again.

It's all ifs, buts and maybes - and Villa aren't to blame this time, it's Citeh for flucking up our pre-season again.

Not sure about collins being a surprise monty, it was widely reported for several days before it happened as was dunne!

Cuellar was a shock though, as it seemed to go through without any speculation.

I thought Collins came out of nowhere then signed two days later or something like that. Besides, it was hardly the type of months-of-speculation rumour that, say, Warnock was. Just shows how quickly things can change. And Cuellar, as you say, came out of nowhere.

Collins had been linked for ages as MON had been watching West Ham for ages.

We just presumed the media were wrong and he was looking at Upson, Parker and hopefully Collison. Upson especially as MON had been quoted multiple times talking up the importance of a left footed centre half.
