Clyne has some on field issues. He's been shocking with Englands U19.

Of the gettable UK based right backs Hutton is one of the better ones. However, he's not as solid defensively as Luke. Excellent going forward mind.

I'd think about Clyne at Palace too.

Doesn't Hutton have some off-field issues?

It's where his best position is.

Nedum Onuoha would be my preferred choice. Remains to be seen if he's willing to leave Citeh or if he wants to play right back, mind.

He indicated he didn't think Mancini rated him, but they've only three recognised senior centre backs, two are shocking and one is used often in midfield so Onuoha might fancy his chances there again.

Either way he's a quality prospect and will be an England player before long if he gets the right move, I reckon.

Yes, as I said earlier, he is extremely ugly.

To add to my post above, that's if we're only looking in Britain.

Van Der Wiel is the best available target, recently had a move fall through to Schalke (I think) for £8million. Brilliant player and one of those real modern right backs who can be a creative force as well as a defensive rock.

edit: quick Google seems to say it was Bayern I think and closer to £12million according to reports. Maybe out of our league.

Sadly, Van der Wiel's proposed move was to Bayern, a bit out of our league. I'm afraid he's destined for bigger things than B6 when he leaves, which probably won't be soon anyway.

As for Onuoha, if Cuellar's bad on the ball then I don't know what he is. Looks clumsier on the ball than a scarecrow in clogs.

Liverpool have made a bid for Luke according to Mr Woodhall..........see pre-season thread

In the Guardian

Quote
Liverpool have made a surprise move for the Aston Villa  full-back Luke Young. Roy Hodgson, the Liverpool manager, tried to sign Young earlier this year when he was in charge of Fulham and he has now rekindled his interest in the former England international. Liverpool are understood to have tabled a £2.75m bid for a player who has been told he is surplus to requirements at Villa Park.

Although Hodgson's pursuit of Young might raise a few eyebrows among Liverpool supporters, the 31-year-old is able to operate in both full-back positions and was asked to represent England as recently as last November, when Fabio Capello failed to persuade the defender to reverse the decision he made earlier that year to retire from international football with seven caps to his name. He would also increase Liverpool's quota of homegrown players to comply with the new Premier League rule.

Liverpool are also short of options in the full-back positions after losing both Emiliano Insúa, who has joined Fiorentina, and Fábio Aurélio, who has left the club on a free transfer. Philipp Degen, the Switzerland right-back, has also been told that he can look for another club after meeting with Hodgson last week.

Although Villa are expected to hold out for closer to £3.5m for Young, the fee is unlikely to prove to be a major stumbling block. Villa have been keen to offload the former Tottenham Hotspur trainee as he is one of the club's higher earners and has three years remaining on his contract. Sunderland had also expressed an interest in signing Young this summer but were unable to match his personal terms.

Villa's decision to make Young available for transfer came as a disappointment to many of the club's supporters. Having joined Villa from Middlesbrough in a £5.5m deal two years ago, Young performed well in his first season but his start to the following campaign was curtailed through a combination of injury and personal tragedy, when Andre, his 17-year-old half-brother, was found dead on holiday.

Young eventually came back into the Villa side but made only 14 Premier League starts and was ultimately unable to dislodge Carlos Cuéllar, an orthodox central defender, from the right-back position. He remained a popular figure among the Villa supporters, however, and was given a standing ovation when he appeared as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers in the final match of the season.

So it's the homegrown thing. Thought it might be something like that. Plus, on our side, he's 31, on a lot of money and getting worse. I think this deal would suit both sides.

I think you can safely say that until we sell Beye, Sidwell, Davies, L Young, NRC, etc or we get some money for Milner that we do not have £15m to spend

Dissapointed to lose him but I think it's good business all round.

£3million for a 31 year old and £2.2million per year off the wage bill for a reserve. Just Heskey, Shorey, Beye and Sidwell to go now...

We need some natural full backs for next season.

I can see Beye staying tbh, not sure who will take on his wages.

Hopefully fist face still wants him.

I hear the Geordies are trying to get Jonathan De Guzman on loan to play right wing back in their new 3-5-2 system. We should offer them Beye back on the cheap.

Its a good move for us and Liverpool, but not really for LY. 31 and on the bench up there? Oh well.
