Watched the whole of the Bohemians game back on AVTV this morning and have to say having Ashley in the free role looked really good, we played some really nice football. He seemed to have a really good understanding with Gabby and I think if we'd had another week of pre season under our belts we would have scored a bucket full yesterday.

Would be a shame for Ashley to be put back onto the wings for the sake of Robbie Keane.

Keane does drift to the wings, though, as does Ireland, and Ash and Downing cut in a lot. If you have 4 players playing the 'free' role, with a good tactical understanding to interchange and all that, it would increase how unpredictable we would be to the opposition, and unpredictability is one of the most important things in football.

Not sure I really get the difference between the 4-4-1-1 and 4-2-3-1 you are describing above. Would be interesting to see if Ash can play that role. Do people envisage a Parker or an Ireland playing in the centre in that formation?

The difference is we do t have 2 players standing up top waiting for the ball.

With the 4411 system  one of the strikers gets involved in midfield, providing a link between midfield and attack!

The difference is we do t have 2 players standing up top waiting for the ball.

Also with the 4-4-1-1 you're playing with traditional wingers in place and two in the middle. The 4-2-3-1 isn't that rigid.

Out of interest, with what I think are the inevitable arrivals of Robbie Keane and Stephen Ireland, plus the departure of Milner. What formation/line up do people think we will go with next season?

At least Keane is having a decent pre season so would come to us in confident form.

Him and Ireland I would expect from the Milner money, please not McGeady who is very mediocre.

Will be interesting to see how we line up in the pre-season games in Portugal when all 1st teamers will be available. My hunch is we will play a rather straightward 4-4-1-1. If we were playing our 1st game of the season with the personel we have now we'd go:

I think not having Delph fit until 2011 is a big blow for MON as we don't have another senior player to cover him and he'll be loathed to go into the transfer market for one. I think we will see Keane and Ireland coming in, either of which would probably replace Albrighton in that line up and play the second striker role with Ashley going out wide.

Like most I would much prefer us to play a 4-2-3-1 but can see it an adventurous step too far for MON to contemplate. 4-3-3 is probably the most daring he will go, after all it has worked for him before.

Good God, that really shows how weak our squad is. Albrighton starting, Osbourne on the bench??? We really need players in, although we will be saying this up until 31st of August and then have to listen to O'Neill moan that due to Lack of funds/unable to shift the dead wood/His targets were too expensive and he never has a backup target.......have I forgotten any excuses?

Yes you have forgotten the one where when he buys someone very late on he will say in mid january that he wished he d have had a full pre season with them

I agree about Mcgeady. In fact I would even prefer Bentley for less money then him.
