It's going to be something like Onuoha, McGeady, Ireland and Keane I reckon.

With Milner going.

Wouldn't be too overjoyed with McGeady or Keane, but atleast it's a step towards a different style of football.

Intersting comments about McGeady - looks like this one might be a goer!

I must admit, I'm not all that delighted to be hearing firstly about that twat Milner wanting out and then the first player MON talks about is McGeady.

No, I dont care much for that at all.
If he spunks the Milner money up the wall on average players he's going to make a powerful enemy.

Hleb, Bentley, Flamini and Keane for me, Heskey, Milner, Sidwell, Osborne and Salifou out for me.  By my reckonings at the quoted fees we would be £7mill up on those deals, so maybe spend about £15 mill on some young players, keeper, full backs etc, Matthews, Clyne, Westwood, Wickham etc, so spending about £8 mill net.  We would be significantly better off.  £3.5 mill net in from Gardner in Jan, so spending very little really.

Realistically something like -

-------------------- Friedel
Onuoha? -- Cuellar --- Dunne --- Warnock
McGeady - Ireland ---- Petrov --- Young
-------------------------- Keane
-------------- Gabby

Let Heskey go. Carew, Delfouneso and Downing as options to change it up. Young off Gabby would be a nice option too.

Tbf, he's doing an press conference in Dublin, all they'll want to do is talk about Celtic.

I don't think it's wise to play Ireland in a two man midfield.

-------------------------------Friedel----------------------------------

L Young-------------Dunne--------Collins/Cuellar--------Warnock

------------------Reo-Coker------------Petrov-----------------------

Mcgeady---------------------Ireland-------------------------A Young

-------------------------------Gabby-----------------------------------

That would be better balanced for me, we won't win anything with it though, imo.

I would like:

Out

Milner - 25 mill
Heskey - 1.5 mill
Osbourne - 0
Salifou - 0
Sidwell - 2 mill
total - 28.5 mill

In
Hleb - 3 mill
Flamini - 5 mill
Keane - 6 mill
Bentley - 8 mill
Westwood - 5 mill
Clyne - 5 mill
total - 32 mill

£3.5 mill net in from Gardner's sale in Jan, so no net spend really.

Delph will be like a new signing.

He'll have a couple of blinding years, then go to City for £78m.

Martin O’Neill had a lot of things on his mind when he fielded questions at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links on Thursday morning ahead of Saturday’s friendly clash with League of Ireland Champions Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

Rumours are rife that his squad will face a big change -- with the interest of Man City in star performer James Milner and Villa's own targets of Aiden McGeady, Robbie Keane and Stephen Ireland -- but O’Neill has promised spectators that Villa’s strongest available squad will feature on Saturday.

“I’ve got most of the senior players here with me and I know how infuriating it can be to be making a lot of changes, particularly in the last minutes of the game for spectators who have come to watch them. So I will make a few changes at half time. But the idea is to give the senior players a half each.”

‘You’ve got 20 players with us at the moment, including two goalkeepers. Richard Dunne obviously will start the game but I would like the senior players to get a half each,” he said.

O’Neill went on to share the view that Irish winger Aiden McGeady could perform well in the Premiership.

“Aiden McGeady, I think he has got the ability to be able to play in the Premiership – without question. I had him when he was a kid at Celtic. I played him without worrying too much about his youth at the time. He played against AC Milan one night at Celtic Park in the Champions League and he was absolutely fantastic.”

However the talk was dominated by rumours about Milner, as a move to Eastlands looks inevitable.

“Obviously there is a question mark over James Milner. I had a conversation with James before the World Cup and he intimated that he would like to go at that time. I haven’t spoken to him since. I know there are conversations between his agent and our chief executive. Man City have made an offer for the player, but our valuation has not been met.”

“I’m sure things may well get resolved. James is due back next week along with the rest of our World Cup players. I would imagine things would get resolved one way or another in the very foreseeable future.”

“Aston Villa are a top quality side and we are linked with players. When Man City are interested […] obviously they are in a different stratosphere but they are building up a squad capable of challenging for the Premiership. So this year is going to be especially difficult.”

“As the chairman mentioned, maybe it is a case of probably having to sell to buy. That is something I’m delving into at the moment,” he said.

well thats just depressed the shit out of me!!! especially the bold. Thats pretty official that it is sell to buy! whats the fucking point, all this work and now were settling for not being able to challenge.

i need a beer!

The sell to buy thing isn't a need to panic. All clubs apart from Money City are in the same position to varying degrees - Ferguson is still spending what he was given of the Ronaldo transfer and hasn't really bought a lot with that, Arsenal will have to let Fabregas go before they can get down to some serious new signings...the reason it seems such a horrifying thought is that unless a star name goes, you never really notice when a player gets sold from another team.

The facts are simple - every new manager tends to get a decent amount of transfer cash because that's what they were promised to make them join. These funds are not limitless and Villa are no exception to this. We don't have the national banks in our back pocket like Real or Barca.

But I would be astounded if we were any different to most clubs in the top ten of this division i.e. capable of pulling out the odd £10 million+ signing.

If we sign McGeady I will cut myself off from the world and live under a bridge with a bottle of white lightening.
