We haven't made a single ambitious signing in the Randy era.

We've made some decent ones, some very good ones, and the odd shit one, but we haven't made a single one we couldn't theoretically have signed pre 2006.

I'm not too sure how many ambitious signings we have made since I started watching the Villa circa 1970....

I agree totally with the previous posters. I whole heatedly believed in the dream 4 years ago, thinking Randy and Martin could really bring great things to the Villa. I'm sad to say that I was wrong.
I don't know if it's Randy not releasing the funds for Martin to sign a big name or that Martin doesn't want to sign q big name.
I think the latter makes more sense as he has never bought a big time player in his managerial carear.

Now don't laugh,
A delivery driver who comes to our building is a season ticket holder at Leicester City and we have our football chats about Martin, Leicester and Villa and he told me that a good source at his club and several of his friends have told him that Ivanhoe will be joining them this season, possibly on loan.

I think for the most part the plan has been sound. Sound rather than inspiring.

Our better players have been those bought with the capacity to grow and develop, or solid stalwarts. Nowt wrong with that. Starting from where we were in 2006 that alone is progress.

But we've realistically been in a position to sign a better calibre of player since at least 2008 and probably since summer 2007.

Even Heskey can do better than Leicester. If he does leave (and bless him but I hope to christ he does) there will be plenty of interest from Premier League clubs still I would imagine.

Capello gave him a higher rating than Rooney so I reckon he's worth about £90m.

I've never prayed to you before God, but if you make this happen I will build many churches in your honour.

Even Risso might join me, hell why not.

Yeah, old Herbert was famous for his £12m signings.

If we've realistically been in a position to sign a betterclass of player, the only one which (kind of) falls into that catagory is Downing.

I also don't think MON is slow, I think hes a believer in second mover advantages letting Man City et al. finish their spending, looking at what we need to compete in our weaknesses and then addressing it. This, to me, also explains why Collins was played out of form instead of Davies or Cueller as MON identified we needed no-nonsense defenders rather than classy defenders strenghtened from when Torres said we was the hardest defence to play against.

We would also be foolish to say we have any idea we know who are have enquired, bid for, or negotiated with. Who knew we bid for Downing in the January transfer window prior to signing? similarly, the only reason we knew about Bentley was because the General let it slip by accident. According to some we also spoke with Joe Cole in Sutton Coldfield a couple of weeks back. The truth is, we dont know, but its bloody irratating to guess otherwise.

Entering into the fifth season of our rebirth/ rebranding  under MON and RL, I'd have hoped that players like Joe Cole and Huntelaar might be semi-realistic targets.

Sad to see us linked with the kind of dross that we'd have probably turned our noses up at back in 2006.

Summed up perfectly for me

4 years on and we are looking at the same mould of player as usual - not a single name linked where you would think "exciting times ahead"

I am not asking for a circus signing but just a little imagination thats all - God this is so mindnumbingly boring and regrettably predictable

As you'd probably have guessed, I'd disagree.

I think Huntelaar was at least semi-realistic, but when teams like Man U are interested what are we supposed to do?  And Joe Cole was only ever after a massive payday.  We're now signing England squad players (Downing and Heskey) and creating our own (Ash, Gabby & Milner) so things are progressing better than some would think.

I feel sorry for carlos as it clearly not his best position at right back, but after luke expressed views in the press about not being too happy at left back and hoping to get back on the right side things went downhill for him-mon doesn't seem to like players making these kind of comments public.

I remember the general saying in a post that noboby could have foreseen what would happen at man city 4 yrs ago- and I wonder if randy maybe doesn't feel we are as likely to be in with a chance of breaking the top 4 as much nowadays and therefore our spending will reflect that.

I've rarely felt less excited ahead of a season and there seems a silence around the club, surely the way to boost ticket sales is to get on a couple of decent signings, even mon doesn't seem his usual self in interviews.

We certainly wouldn't have been paying half the reserve team £40k a week pre-Randy.

I'd say there have been lots actually.  Not all have been successful, but I'd say the following all showed more ambition or at least a desire to try and do something different:

Dean Saunders
Dalian Atkinson
Stan Collymore
Savo Milosevic
Sasa Curcic
Andy Townsend
JPA
