We've lacked a third striker who can contribute 10+ league goal for ages.

keane, Carew and Gabby should all achieve that and with the Fonz getting more game time, I'd be setting 40 league goals as a target for our four strikers next season.

It goes down to 20 if Heskey's still here...

I think 40 goals from 76 starts (based on 38 games playing with two strikers) is ambitous.

We don't need a team that beats City's on every day, we need a team that can last the marathon better than theirs, especially against the smaller teams.

We won't have a better team/squad on paper than Man City do, and probably never will as long as the oil money keeps getting pumped in.  But we can be better than them in terms or organization, team spirit, hard work and balance to the side.

My thoughts precisely, John.

Out of their signings so far, only Yaya Toure could actually play well from the start. Jerome Boateng is still young, and David Silva is just not going to settle in for quite a while. Milner would of course be a good signing, but I'm not entirely sure what problem he would solve in their side. All this talk of Dzeko and so on is just silly, spending all that on more strikers doesn't really make sense, not to mention that Dzeko in particular really wouldn't settle in quickly at all.

Like you say, Paulie, good players, but it's taking on a somewhat disjointed look at the moment.

Anyone else concerned that we're hearing this so often he's bound to get off to a storming start?

I think last season it was league goals wise:

Heskey 3 goals.
Fonz 1
Carew 11
Gabby 13

So 28 there. If Heskey isn't gracing the turf again with his unique quality, then Fonz will be getting more game time for a start and Keane would comfortably get a few aswell.

Tbh I can't see us finishing above Man. City this season, would rather go after Arsenal again as they will be vulnerable if Fabregas goes.

The way I see it, is if you imagine Keane and Gabby being the main starters and getting 15 goals each, Carew 3rd choice and 10, with the Fonz netting 5 would be your 40.  I think it's unrealistic to ask Carew to get 10 without at least 15 starts, so of the 76 available that's 61 left, of which a couple should go to the Fonz to get his 5 goals, although most would likely be as a sub.  So, Gabby and Keane have less than 60 starts between them to get 30 goals, so better than 1 every other game from each of them.  Or to put it another way, imagine you play just the same two strikers every game - you don't get two 20-a-season men, although one getting 20+ and another getting 10+ is possible.  I just don't think there are enough games to go around for our boys to get a combined 40 goals.

And I think we just go after 4th - couldn't care less who it is we're chasing for it with!

And don't forget the unsettling effect that players not getting a regular game is likely to have. In Adebayour, Tevez and Bellamy, Man City have got 3 masters of the art of throwing their toys out of the pram when they are not in the team week in, week out....

In Carew's advantage, he's got the ability to come off the bench and make an impact by scoring. That's actually quite a rare knack. If we get a decent first choice, which may or may not be Roberto Keane, we'll be in good shape.

Carew would be a heck of a squad option IMO. It'd also suit his iffy fitness too.

It almost sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that having really good players is actually a bad thing, Richard

Besides, its not like there isnt much to be happy about with regards to Villa. We're in pretty good shape.

The World Cup has helped, in all seriousness. It's the closest to pure football, you can't buy a player from a national team.
