The more i think about it, the more i think Robbie Keane is the kind of player we need.

He's the type of player we need, but I don't think he's the player. Dislike the bloke, just don't want to see him in a Villa shirt.  Totally irrational but as I'm nearing bus pass age that's acceptable.

I still don't want him! I think the only time I will change my mind is at 11.59pm on 31 Aug if we maintain our usual transfer policy, i.e. he's the only option

You make it sound like considering motivation in signing players is a bad thing. I disagree, strongly. It should be a major consideration and if we select youngsters because they are going to work harder and offer a chance of improvement, thats a good thing. I've often said, we are more likely to get a top side together by developing one rather than buying one ready made.

Fully agree Maz, and it's why he still has plenty of credit in the bank as far as I'm concerned.

But I temper that with the realisation that we are unlikely to see big players arrive whilst he is here. It's just not what he's about.

Just read the mail.

Very happy stories today, City to offer £28m for Milner, Randy might find it too much to turn down and Ash to Liverpool

Oh joy

File under bollocks I hope

Speaking as one unconvinced of his ability to take us further, and one who doesn't like his brand of football, I can say that I actually like him a lot.

That's one of the things that makes him such an intriguing character - he's such a likeable, witty, erudite figure, and you don't get many of those in football. I don't think I've ever wanted a Villa manager to succeed more.

Agree to an extent, but he annoys the hell out of me at times.
Be it punching below our weight in the transfer market, bizarre team selection or the 'r' word.

If it's in the Mail the I guarantee it's bollocks....... Didn't they turn down £28m before the World Cup anyway?

We've lacked a third striker who can contribute 10+ league goal for ages.

keane, Carew and Gabby should all achieve that and with the Fonz getting more game time, I'd be setting 40 league goals as a target for our four strikers next season.

It goes down to 20 if Heskey's still here...

No, it was £20m I thought. £28m would be too much to turn down (much closer to our valuation than theirs), and anyway the more I think about City the less bothered I am by them. We don't need a team that beats City's on every day, we need a team that can last the marathon better than theirs, especially against the smaller teams.

As for Ash to Liverpool, that is bollocks of the highest order.

We also need a team which wins more games over the course of a season than City's does.

Unfortunately, they're putting together a selection of very good players. That doesn't guarantee instant success (nothing does) but it makes it infinitely easier to do than not having lots of very good players.

That's everyone's problem, incidentally, not just ours.

Out of their signings so far, only Yaya Toure could actually play well from the start. Jerome Boateng is still young, and David Silva is just not going to settle in for quite a while. Milner would of course be a good signing, but I'm not entirely sure what problem he would solve in their side. All this talk of Dzeko and so on is just silly, spending all that on more strikers doesn't really make sense, not to mention that Dzeko in particular really wouldn't settle in quickly at all.

Like you say, Paulie, good players, but it's taking on a somewhat disjointed look at the moment.

The Mail hasn't bother doing proper transfer rumours during the summer for years now. They just scout the internet and other papers and put what they're saying on their back page.

Newspapers have as long as it takes Chinese slave labourers to produce enough iPrats for everybody. Then its game over.

I agree, City will be hard to compete with next season. Lets hope the stories linking us with McGeady aren't true. Not that would knock my confidence in MON anymore than it already is.......
