MON is a big personality in any club he has managed but he is not alone on that one is he? The likes Mourhino, SAF, whinger and Redknob have all had players that been shipped out after getting too big for their boots.

IMO player power is at a ridiculous level (as shown by Englands pathetic WC) and managers need to be strong when running a team and alot of managers take the personality of a player when signing them?

Its why I often get labelled a MON disciple or whatever shite term is doing the rounds. I'm really not and in many things he drives me nuts, but there is so much unfair shite talked about him its ridiculous so I feel obliged to put that straight.

It would be more refreshing if people came out and said they just didnt like him rather than make things up about him and propogate myths.

Speaking as one unconvinced of his ability to take us further, and one who doesn't like his brand of football, I can say that I actually like him a lot.

That's one of the things that makes him such an intriguing character - he's such a likeable, witty, erudite figure, and you don't get many of those in football. I don't think I've ever wanted a Villa manager to succeed more.

I suspect that, were it not for that personality trait, there would be a lot more moaning on here.

Same here Paulie. Think we have made this point a number of times about him. Were he like DOL in persona, he would be getting howlers from the home crowd with some of the frankly inept displays last season.

I don't like him at all, and think his "quirky personality" is a definite case of "the emperor's new clothes".  That said, I don't care really, I just want to watch entertaining, winning football.  I don't like Alex Ferguson either, but I'd love him to be manager of Villa.

Even if that was Robbie Keane?

I think 6 million for a player with his finishing ability would be a snip.

See Louis Saha as an example and the amount of goals he has scored.

I wouldnt pay £12m for Robbie Keane, no. I would possibly prefer him to Eduardo though for the same price given the doubts over his injury.

Louis Saha worked out and he's always been a player I've liked.
But he may just as easily broken down as he's done in the past.
I'm not saying dont take a chance on a player but rather favour a player with no injury issues this time.
We can really do without buying a player to solve some of our goal scoring issues and then lose him early doors.

I agree, but then I think we need 2 strikers to cover that hole and Eduardo would do very nicely as one of them. I think it is much more about confidence than anything esle, and get 4-5 goals early in the season he would be flying.

2 strikers?
Would that mean you'd want to replace Carew?

Saha has scored 19 in 57 games at Everton.  Given that goals aside he doesn't overly contribute to the team, I think we need to be looking for more than 1 in 3 from any new striker.

I like Eduardo and think he's in many ways exactly what we need, but I would share Mazrim's concerns over his injury record.

Carew + Gabby + Delfouneso + one other.

I don't see why we need two new strikers

As much as some of us dislike the 'big lump upfront' approach, it's a tactic that can be effective and a player we should have within our squad.  Were both Carew and Heskey to go then I'd like one of the two new strikers we got to be of that type, so it makes more sense to just keep Big John!

Agreed. I'd also have Weimann on the periphery. But I think we're after one very good striker. To go with a playmaker/creative spark in midfield who would also mean more goals.

A 1 in 3 striker would be a very good player, much more than that and you're into silly money territory.

By the same measure you're using (League appearances), Eduardo has scored 8 in 41. 1 in 5 versus Saha's 1 in 3.

I don't like him either and I've said so on here quite a few times and been accused of having an "irrational dislike" of him.  Nothing irrational about it,  aside from not liking many aspects of his approach to football, where some may perceive him as "witty and erudite" to me he comes over as snide and patronising, and trying a bit too hard to be like Clough when on TV.

Although in Carew we have a striker with a record that is better than 1 in 3 - and there are a lot of people saying we need to upgrade on that.

they don't have to be expensive signings. older players with big reputations. you'd never see an owen turn up or viera for example. never has never will

i mean Juninho's media profile. mon signed the clapped out free transfer 2004 version

Have you run so low on people to argue with that you're actually arguing with yourself now?

As for this 'media profile'/'big personality', thing I genuinely think it's rubbish.  How is it he wants to be top dog, yet proclaims Ashley Young as 'world class'?

It seems the players people are accusing him of not buying are exactly the players that are currently out of our reach.  So people that don't like the manager can make any shite they like up about 2hy, but the truth is they wouldn't sign for us.

larf. you're classing Juninho in 2004 a high profile singing similar to owen? if we'd signed owen and he'd been on the bench it would have been about a month  before the press would be suggesting he'd leave for his england career
