In that case there may well have been a judgement issue, MON wanted to give the player more time to develop. Which he got wrong, but out of good intentions rather than mindless dithering, I'm sure you'll agree. He's not totally risk-averse though (see Milner and Young), just all managers have these moments.

Give us a hint who the player was, though, go on...

Who is/ was this French player?

I know we had the goalkeeper (Mandanda) on trial, but opted for Scott Carson instead.

He has looked awful when i have seen him play lately but I really rate Evra and he has looked awful too.

I'd only really class that as a mistake if this French player is now actually worth £14m??

Salifou was in the Swiss second division. Which makes his signing even more bizarre.

Well, what if - leaving his current worth aside - the French player has gone on to perform well, but the player we opted for instead turned out to be a turkey? That'd look like a mistake, too.

There's not really much point worrying about players we didn't sign, though, it's all about who we bring in now.

I agree with Hookey, there's an air of dullness and predictability about the place. I suspect the players we bring in will be of the type mostly predicted on here, but it would be nice to think we could do something different in the market, to suggest it won't be more of the same next season.

I agree it's a bit pointless arguing over the merit of a player we didn't sign, especially when we don't know who the player is!

But I disagree about the signings.  The two most frequently talked about and most likely are Keane and Ireland.  And despite being predictable I think both could address our issue of being able to attack more effectively through the centre.

I'm just trying to say I think MON dithers a little and we do look at overseas players, it doesnt mean MON is always going to sign them.

Im just hoping we see some exciting signings in the summer other than the predicitible..

yes we could have signed somebody exciting from overseas , somebody
we might not as know alot about but we signed the like of Sidwell and Shorey.

It would be nice to have something different sometimes.

Different or not doesn't bother me.  Better or not does.

Who gives a toss if a signing is exciting or not?

Darren Bent and Steven Ireland wouldn't be exciting at all. But it would leave us in a smashing position.

Ireland is one of the few players we've been linked with thus far I'd be generally excitied about signing.

Like Dunney, the lad would have a point to prove to City and could become the creative element in our team we haven't properly had since Merson and much young aswell.

Id be quite excited about Ireland If that came off. I would prefer a signing that would make me want to get a season ticket .  WE have enough players that do a job, we need 2 or 3 more signings of the next level and If that was the case, they would be exciting.

Must be it. That's the only reason we haven't signed David Villa or Emmanuel Adebayor. I challenge you to name one incontrabvertibly good "big name" we could have signed but didn't.
