How did I work it out?
Arteta is a central midfield playmaker that favours the attacking side of the game whereas Gerrard is a central midfield playmaker that favours the attacking side of the game.

Arteta is more of a wide player that sometimes plays centrally. That's the opposite to Gerrard isn't it?

They're both central midfielders that can play wide or off the front man as I see it. I'm not all that bothered though really.
Gerrard is a much better player and that was the discussion I suppose.

I notice it says he's staying, not that he's agreed a new deal.  Bosman in 2011?

Surely Arteta is more of a Petrov type deep lying holding midfielder and Gerrard is your Milner type all action blockbuster midfielder.  Quite difficult to compare the 2, but both are better than their comparables in our side.

I think that's right.  Arteta is all about touch and subtlety; whereas Gerard is more about power and dynamism.

Both excellent players.  Of the two, Arteta is more gettable.

But Everton selling their best player to us would be like us selling out best player to, erm, Man City.

The crazy world of French football.  I'd have love to see these two "having a laugh" at Villa (from the BBC):

France's playmaker Yoann Gourcuff - the struggling heir apparent to Zinedine Zidane - is being cast as socially isolated from the core of Les Bleus squad after an anonymous start to the World Cup in their drab 0-0 opener with Uruguay.
"Yo Gourcuff, I never hear him," said captain Patrice Evra. "To speak to Gourcuff, you have to talk to Jeremy Toulalan. It's with him that I see him having a laugh." There is even speculation that Gourcuff is being ignored by his team-mates on the pitch, with Nicolas Anelka and Franck Ribery allegedly guilty of deliberately not passing the ball to the Bordeaux midfielder.

If they have a really bad world cup then they might be obtainable.  Someone mentioned on here that MON is quoted as being a Toulalan fan.

You mean in that we can keep offering more and more money until they can't say no.

Arteta certainly holds for Everton with Feillani, Cahill, Osman, Pienaar etc the offensive minded midfielders.

I'd say that with them all fit Felliani will be the deeper midfielder.

I thought Fellaini when fit was the holding midfielder who comes up for set pieices?

Arteta is more a playmaker. He can drop deep to get the ball and make things happen, but he's certainly not the sort of player who'll get his foot in and do a lot of harrying. Normally they play Phil Neville as holding mid when he's fit. And Fellaini certanly likes to get stuck in, though often with similar results to Mr Paul Scholes.

The last few seasons, Arteta tended to play as a narrow wideman. Whether the tail end of the season just gone, he moved centrally and maybe deeper, I don't know. I haven't paid much attention to Everton in the last 6 months. Rodwell is a box to box sort of player. Gosling can also play CM.

Oh and I'd love Arteta by the way, but I suspect he'll have top 4 takers. He'd improve any of the top 4's midfields actually.

Probably cost 20 mill though. Hadn't he signed a pre-deal with Utd? Or was that just a rumour?

He'll probably end up there though. Quality player though.

I agree Supertom he is their playmaker, that doesn't mean he's not their holding player though does it, like Petrov for us.  And your right he doesn't put his foot in and do a lot of harrying, as the other guys like Neville and Feillani do that as you say, but again this doesn't mean he is not their holding player.  Many holding players these days are talented playmakers with the box to box destroyers like NRC and Essien doing the destructive stuff alongside them.
