Pienaar, Ireland and Parker.

Any one of them would improve us.  The most realistic of the three would improve us the most.

£12m for Pienaaer is far too much imho.

After watching the Germans last night, forget all the other fowards we have been linked to, i think Klose or Podolski would be absolutely ideal for us, if available, and if the right ages.

Was talking up Ozil 12 mths ago, but i think we have missed the boat now, but lovely player.

Some of the midfielders in the WC have been well worth a look, Bradley , and the other American central midfielder, both are worth another look at, as was the Uruguayan cm, as was the Ghanaian cm.

No to both. Week in and week out they don't score the goals.

Lahm looks very very good as ever.

Oezil looks the most impressive player seen yet, and is the sort I would love to see the Villa try and get hold of, showing a bit of ambition. Imagine him with Milner, Ashley etc witha  good holding man behind them and 1 up front. We might not look quite so one dimensional all the bleedin time!
I agree ozzjim, a player that doesn't run in straight lines.

Ozil might be out of reach but we should definitely be looking for that type of player, someone who can do the unexpected.

Not identical in style by any means, but from the limited pool we generally select from Ireland would probably be our best bet.

If we are selling Milner for around £30m, I would love to see us use it to get an elite playmaker like Ozil. I don't believe accumulating a bunch of players who are very good, but not great, is ever going to be enough to push us to top four.

Pienaar would be welcome, but another very good, rather than great player.

I know what you mean.

But even if we did the unexpected and put in a bid for a highly rated elite playmaker, would they realistically pitch up at VP?

Taking Ozil as an example -and that's a player who has really only came to prominence in the last 12-18 months- if he decides to agitate for a move this summer he'll have the choice of Bayern and the other big sides in his homeland or one of the top sides in Europe. Moving to Villa would be a sideways step at best.

Ireland for two seasons prior to the last campaign hit a level of consistency and performance that far outstripped most of Citeh's big names signed for astronomical fees. Indeed, he was probably one of the best performers in the Premiership full stop. That indicates to me that he could hit the level we're looking for.

He fell back last year, no question. But that can often be the case with a new manager and different ideas. Mancini like most Italian coaches values defence and stability above all else. Ireland is by no means a luxury player, capable of only playing in the final third. But if Mancini has the straight choice of picking a disciplined safety first midfielder who doesn't offer quite as much going forward over a player like Ireland, he'll invariably go with the former.

would much rather sign ireland than pienaar, pienaar at £12 m no thank you!

I'd rather have both.

Our budget (particularly if swelled by the sale of Milner) should easily stretch to that.

Usually been impressed anytime I've seen Pienaar play. Arteta is the go-to guy in that side, no question. But Pienaar in his own way has been responsible for changing their style of play in recent seasons. They used to be even more one dimensional than us, but now they can actually vary it a bit and get the ball down and play.

He won't be going to any of the top 4, I'd be pretty certain of that. Unless it's on a free in 12 months.

But for us he could be a valuable addition.

If next year we are in a position to select four (or five)
 from:

Ashley Young
Petrov
Ireland
Pienaar
Albrighton
Downing
Delph

and possibly a DM in the Diame or Alou Diarra mould, it would be very hard to argue that isn't an improvement on what we currently have.

instead of paying 12 million for him, let's try and find this season's Pienaar and this season's Saha, i.e players who are on a free this summer.

I'd rather not spend £12m on Pienaar, buy Ireland  for £10m, Kallstrom for nowt, keep Milner and buy a top striker.

So would I.

The keep Milner part looks unlikely right now.

Though I do rate Pienaar, at that price, no.

As previously reported in the World Cup forum, I'm on the case:-

If MON asks me for a scouting report I shall tell him that Ghana's Asamoah looked a decent player.

Just make sure you're clear about which Ghanaian CM. I don't want to see Prince-Boateng at Villa.

I cannot believe that Kallstrom hasn't been snapped up yet? I wish MON would get in there but I very much doubt he is his type of player....... Well actually we know he isn't !!

He does to me too but I hold a deeply personal grudge against him for the FA Cup final.

I had £10 on him to score 1st at 25-1 and another tenner on Pompey to win. Where's that headbanging emoticon?
