If you understand football, you would understand my comment about Gerrard. Some players have the ability/aura to dominate games, impose themselves on and influence big games, few players have it, Gerrard has, as does Rooney, and Maradona was probably its finest exponent.Great players, and Gerrard is one, can win games virtually single handed.

Regarding Delf, and i'm not going to get in yet another arguement about MON, i believe his age is a big factor in why MON did'nt use him as much. For a 19 yr old to be seen as our saviour , is far too much pressure to put him under.
MON obviously does rate him very highly, you only have to see his comments about him, and i believe that MON will be looking for a striker who can play alongside Gabby OR Delf.

Regarding gerrard, top class player and I think milner will be the next gerrard and an England star for years to come.

[/quote]Must admit, I get wound up by the obsession with 'holding' midfielders... not so long ago, it was acceptable to have two all-rounders in the middle of midfield. Then Claude Makelele rocked up and the sit in front of the back four defensive midfielder was in vogue. He was suited to it but everyone is. Can't help thinking this 'Lampard-Gerrard' England problem wouldn't have existed if people banished the notion of a holding player and just allowed them to play in tandem, both disciplined enough to make tackles, cover ground and get forward.

I think the change was not just Makalele but also the tactical adjustment required after the "tackle from behind" rule was introduced as this meant players (generally) need to be face on i.e. deeper than previously.

For me, it's having that defensive shield in front of the back 4 to protect them, and having a player like that then allows the other midfielders more freedom to get forward and attack.  For instance, I think we'd see more from Ashley Young in an attacking sense if we played NRC instead of Petrov in that role, although we might not get the ball to him as often!

Petrov has much better positional discipline than NRC.  NRC has far too much energy to be restricted to a "defensive shield", he's a box to box man, but can't shoot or pass and hence is no longer good enough to be more than a squad player for a top 6 side.

I thought NRC's best games for us were when he played central with Barry in 07/08 and he was the anchor man then.  Ideally we need a player there that can combine his energy/strength and Petrov's footballing ability.

Sadly Michael Essien is unlikely to be available.

From the BBC website:-

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is interested in making a summer move for AC Milan striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
http://www.caughtoffside.com/2010/06/07/chelsea-boss-interested-in-16m-ac-milan-striker-ancelotti-sets-sights-on-dutch-master-huntelaar/

We're not mentioned, and unlikely to be in the running if Chelsea DO want him, but I'm a big fan and think he'd do excellently in the Premier League.  £16m on him would be a great way to spend a chunk of the Milner money!!

Beckham is never a winger, he's a right sided midfield player.

I'd agree with this, and also believe that was the key to the balance of that side.

Beckham crossing from deeper, with Neville overlapping to create the space and Giggs getting further forward, crossing from the byline.

I also think David Bentley with his head screwed on could give us the same balance.

I think Albrighton could be that player given a chance.  He's the best crosser of a ball I've seen for a long time, dare I say since Beckham?

Must be worth a run in the team if downing doesn't start performing soon!

I agree.  Allbrighton is an excellent crosser of the ball and could well become a regular in the side if given a chance; he's got potential to be as good or better than the likes of Bentley and Downing.

This is the sort of comment we used to see about Steven Davis and Luke Moore. Albrighton has shown promise but it's a massive leap to start putting him in that sort of company when he's hardly played a first team game.
