You think we could realistically sign Glenn Johnson?

But only for a couple of seasons. An upgrade on Petrov needs to be significantly young IMO.

Would we look better or worse with a team (realistically) looking like

Friedel

Johnson
Collins
Dunne
Warnock

Downing
Parker
Ireland
Young

Gabby
Davies or some such ball winning headerer

Marginally worse. The CM would miss Milner's drive, though I'd say the balance of Parker and Ireland is more suited to Stan and Milner. Davies is effective, far more than Heskey, but we need a goal scorer, so he's nowhere near Carews league.

Johnson? Can't see us getting Glenda if you mean him?

If you mean Micah Richards, he'd frighten the life out of me. As a defender, Carlos all the way. Richards is quick and a great athlete but on the ball he's not great. Good for a CB maybe, but for an attacking fullback? You'd want better.

I'd be quite happy with Richards. I think theres a really good player there who would suit us.
He would need to get back to something like his form of two years ago but why not.
Young, strong, quick and he can jump like Magic Johnson.
Onuoha would be a good option too.

They have a lot of really good young players on the fringes of their team and I think, in the main, they'd be better off using them rather than the hired guns they'll bring in.

So we should get in there if they are available.

Genuine question, why is everyone so convinced that Delph is going to be a world beater?

He started what, 2 or 3 league games last season. I have seen nothing as yet which suggests he is going to be a top drawer footballer.

Of course he is still young, and has some good raw attributes, but to be putting all of our eggs in that basket seems like blind hope rather than having any substance.

Whatever happened to Michael Johnson? Two seasons back in the early stages, he looked top quality, then he just drifted away. People were calling him the next Gerrard (but that can either mean he's a twat, or he's a decent footballer, so maybe they meant twat??).

Didn't the lad get a touch of the fancy dan syndrome and acting up a bit? He's been injured too, but his career seems to have ground to a halt.

I do see a lot of City's younger lot getting moved on. The Weiss fella looks quite useful, I think he's a Slovenian international. There's enough potential in Richards and Onouha for O Neill to turn into top quality. If Richards sorts his brains out and his positioning, he could be world class.

World beater?

He's a good footballer - energetic, good touch, determined and a decent range of passing.  Of course there are no guarantees but I've seen enough from him to know that he has every chance of making it.

I am just a bit surprised that some folks seem to think he is the answer to all of our problems when we haven't seen a great deal of him thus far.

Ive seen enough of Delph to think he's going to be a brilliant player. I thought that the moment I first saw him play for England U21s. He just has something special about him.

No guarantees obviously but its nothing like blind hope either. More like an educated guess.

I dont know where this hyperbole like "world beater" and "the answer to all our problems" is coming from. I only suggested him as a long term replacement for Petrov thus it not being a problem that Parker, if we signed him, would give us two or three years.

You can only judge by what you see.  That, twinged with a modicum of 'hope', would say to me that he has every chance of being a top player.

I'm sure we had a similar debate on here around this time last year as to what made some of us think Milner would be any good as a central player!

I actually suggested in an H&V article that the signing of Downing might give us a chance to give Milner a go in the middle but that is by the by.

Perhaps it's because I don't watch other football outside of us, and didn't do the Fiorentina friendly, but I have seen Delph twice.

He looked a little boy lost against Wigan and was OK against Man Ure.

I haven't seen enough of him yet to suggest to me will be bursting into a first team regular any time soon.
