love to see these formations and why people think he's going to change from his two wingers approach

Who said he's going to?

well if you want to play milner in a more attacking role who's going to be in centre midfield? one bloke?

1- I said I wanted Milner as the covering midfielder and he's so mobile and energetic you could play him as one of two midfielders with one more advanced ahead of him. However, if he is that attacking midfielder that's fine by me too because he's so versatile.
2- You can play with three midfielders, 2 wingers and... *drum roll* one striker!!! And he has done in the past.

I would also get rid of Heskey ( which MON wont do)   and buy Connor Wickham from Ipswich..

Petric,Agbonlahor,Carew,Fonz and Wickham would be great for next season.

Yeah, so we have a player who can cover quicker than Petrov and still support the attacks. Like say... Milner.

1 striker, but two wingers and an attacking midfielder making runs from deep. Its hardly a negative tactic.
A lot of the best teams play this way and we used to good effect.
Its just an option anyway, not something we have to use all the time.

We're not talking about a change to formation, just whether if we buy a new midfiedler he should be an attacking or more defensive player.

1 guy covering a 3 man midfield opposition on his own while the other went forward is asking a lot , even if it was milner. we saw what chelsea did to us with 3 in midfield

mebbe, but you need goals from your midfielders for it to work and we don't get 'em. milner's managed what 8 and he's the best.

Milner has scored 12 goals. Young is a goal threat and provider (9 goals, 16 assists) and Downing will contribute more next season. Our midfield does well and will be even more effective with another top player like van der Vaart or Ireland or whoever.

I dont know what you're going on about 1 man covering a three man midfield opposition. Its the job of the whole midfield to defend. They all track back too. Few wingers protect their full back like Young.

That would do nicely. I thought Petric looked a quality player when we played Hamburg the other year. Kallstrom is quality though inconsistent, and Hleb is a class player on his day.

Them and a few top draw youngsters as well.

He has more than one assist. 3 goals and 6 assists in 32 apps.
Not up to his usual standards but he'll do much better next season I reckon after a proper rest and pre season.

Maz, optimism is great, but it is sorely misplaced in Downing. He has never scored prolifically from midfield, and if the centre forwards are not giving him good movement to hit in the box, his assist count won't go up much either. Plus he is a fairy.

Just see how he goes next season. He's always been one of the better crossers in the league and weighed in with assists. If we get a major striker in he'll prove very useful. I dont expect him to score loads of goals but he'll chip in with 8-10 goals in a season and around 10-15 assists typically.
I also think this stuff about him being a wimp is bollocks. He is a winger, not an iron man defensive midfielder. Ive seen him make plenty of challenges but its never going to be his game.

Anyway, its not optimism, its giving him a fair crack of the whip. There was plenty of criticism of Milner this time last year and he's now one of the ebst players in the league and its not just because he's moved position although that's helped, its because he's settled at the club and had a full pre season with us. Also, I recall Downing getting plenty of praise when he first came into the side in November/December. He should have been taken out of the firing line more maybe. He's clearly not 100%.

But if Downing doesnt step up, he can watch Albrighton or another winger we might get take his place. But I've a feeling he'll be decent for us next season.

4-4-2 is shit.
Get some players who can play in a formation that's not this.

No, I don't know who they are.
No, I don't know where they play.
No, I don't know how much they'll cost.
No, I don't know what salary they'll ask for.
No, I don't know how old they are or if they're injury prone.
No, I don't know if the shirt sales generated will pay for their keep.

Just get it done.
